Today MPs launched the cross-party group for fair elections in parliament 🗳️ Liberal Democrat MP Lisa Smart is the group's vice chair 🔶 Let's end First Past the Post and bring on Proportional Representation 👐

At an LDER and @FairElectionsUK Fringe event, @OllyGloverLD said "I'm spending a lot of time campaigning for Proportional Representation because our politics simply isn't working. (...) We need a politics that brings more ideas into it and where everyone's votes count equally."
Are you a young person? Do you feel like your voice isn’t being heard in politics? Register for this cross-party event in collaboration with @MakeVotesMatter. actionnetwork.org/forms/beyond-t…

🗳️ What’s next in the fight for fair votes? 👏 We were delighted to co-host this fringe event with @LibDem4ER, discussing how our call for a National Commission on Electoral Reform can help deliver PR 🙏 A huge thanks to our panel and audience

Join us at #LDconf tomorrow for two great Fringe events on Saturday 20 Sept - first at 1pm and then at 8.15pm (further details in thread). You can also come speak with us about #ProportionalRepresentation at our stall no. 58. 👋

How should the government take the next step in addressing the distortions of our political system? MPs in the All Party Parliamentary Group on Fair Elections have set out one approach this week: a National Commission on Electoral Reform. electoral-reform.org.uk/mps-suggest-na…
🏛️ Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome MPs from across the House to a parliamentary drop-in session 📸 We discussed the Terms of Reference for a National Commission on Electoral Reform, gave out hard copies, and took some photos! 2/3

💡 “This is a clear proposal for the Government to set up a National Commission that could independently ask the big questions about our democracy” 📢 MPs made the case for fair votes & a National Commission on Electoral Reform in the #InternationalDemocracyDay debate 🧵 1/3
Highlights from the Westminster debate on #DemocracyDay👇 Thank you @RNBlake for securing this important debate, and to @RichardFoordLD @LizziCollinge @JamesMacCleary for making the case for electoral reform. A real democracy is one in which every voice is heard. We need #PRnow

Today marks International #DemocracyDay. Democracy matters - and it cannot be taken for granted. Our voting system leaves swathes of people feeling powerless and fuels disillusionment, which can have dangerous consequences. Change can't wait. We need #PRnow.

When parties with just a third of the vote are winning big majorities our democracy is broken. MPs have a plan to fix it. Stephen McNair reports eastangliabylines.co.uk/democracy/at-l…
In countries using proportional representation, they have higher voter turnout because every vote affects the composition of the parliament and therefore what policies are implemented. With FPTP, voters are stuck with safe seats and wasted votes. #MakeVotesMatter
