Today MPs launched the cross-party group for fair elections in parliament ๐ณ๏ธ Liberal Democrat MP Lisa Smart is the group's vice chair ๐ถ Let's end First Past the Post and bring on Proportional Representation ๐
We are working with our allies including @MakeVotesMatter to fight for a politics that works for everyone. No more wasted votes. No more tactical voting. #ChangeTheVotingSystem
๐ฅ For a new report, @Demos interviewed 700+ teenagers. 72.8% agreed: democracy must be defended at all costs. But many weren't happy with the way it currently works. "Change the voting system" was proposed as one of the solutions. We agree. Read more: demos.co.uk/research/insidโฆ
Weโve seen it time and again. When one party holds most of the seats on less than half the votes, the supposed โmajorityโ is fragile from the start. buff.ly/hbPn0xt
The Dutch election proved what we've been saying for ages: that PR voting systems tame extremist parties and expose them. FPTP in Britain has delivered Reform's agenda without them needing to get anywhere near Number 10. The Temper Trap author Stuart Donald for @politicshome.
๐ With politics fragmenting, experts warn First Past the Post risks plunging the UK into chaos next general election ๐ค Parties have an opportunity to get a grip on this risk to our national stability ๐ We need a National Commission on Electoral Reform bbc.com/news/articles/โฆ
๐ฅ In just 5 days, more than 12,000 people have signed our petition to the Democracy Minister. Can you help make it even bigger? The government's Elections Bill could be published any day. We need a fairer voting system to be part of it. Sign & share โ๏ธ actionnetwork.org/petitions/petiโฆ
Pleased to announce that I've been elected as President of Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform @LibDem4ER. Excited to continue the work that @sarahjolney1 has already done in her role. It's time for progress on issues such as votes at 16, voter ID & wider electoral reform.
We will keep supporting @EdwardJDavey and @LibDems in the fight for fair votes, including working with our allies and cross-party - First Past The Post has got to go!
Keir Starmer needs to wake up and fix our broken voting system before the next election, or he risks letting Nigel Farage into Number 10. We will keep fighting for fair votes to make sure every voice is heard.

"First Past the Post doesn't represent the British people and doesn't give voice to their concerns." @EdwardJDavey Inside and outside of Parliament, there's a growing cross-party consensus: our voting system is not working. It's time to scrap it. ๐ฎ
๐ฒ โThe case for First Past the Post absolutely breaks down... when an election result feels random, its hard for that to feel legitimateโ ๐๏ธ @dmk1793 discusses our call for a National Commission on Electoral Reform on @OhGodWhatNowPod ๐ฏ โI think this is the way forwardโ
We deserve better than governments that 2/3 of the public voted against, or MPs that 3/4 of their constituents didn't choose. We deserve better than to be ignored over and over again, because of where we live or who we support. We all deserve better than First Past the Post.
๐ฅ Great to see members of the APPG for Fair Elections calling for a fair, proportional voting system As @annalouisedixon writes, the first step is a National Commission: โa time-limited independent review, guided by expert evidence and the values of the voting public.โ
โTo tackle the hate & division we see dominating our modern political debate we have to build a democracy that is truly representative of its peopleโ ๐น @annalouisedixon makes the case for Proportional Representation, starting with a National Commission renewal.org.uk/blog/eletc/
It's Halloween and Westminster is looking spooky... ๐๐ Here are some of the creatures haunting the House of Commons under First Past the Post:

"We have a five- or six-party-system trapped in the body of a two-party electoral system." @ProfTimBale explains why multi-party politics is here to stay ๐ Voters want real choice. We need a proportional voting system that makes it possible.
We should be able to look at a poll and have a reasonable sense of how the countryโs votes would translate into seats. electoral-reform.org.uk/latest-yougov-โฆ

Latest YouGov poll shows multi-party Britain breaking the voting system
If there were a general election tomorrow, who would form the next government? It sounds like a simple question if you have access to the latest polls. But when the latest YouGov poll, r
"If you see how Reform is polling, at about a third of the vote, some people have calculated that this translates to a big majority. In the same way Labour won a big majority on about 35% of the vote." It's never been more clear: the system is broken.
Vote tactically or Reform will win. Vote tactically or Plaid will win. Vote tactically or... We're hearing it in Caerphilly today. We've heard it a million times before. Under PR, we could just vote for whoever we support - and every vote would count. Sounds better, doesn't it?
In countries using PR, parties are incentivised to work together collaboratively. They keep the 80% that works and try to fix the 20% that doesn't. With FPTP, parties scrap it altogether and take years to implement a new process with lots of flaws. #MakeVotesMatter
