Math is not magic.
When you use the word "trick" to describe this mathematical approach, it fuels our social myth that math is incoherent and learning math is memorizing "magical" algorithms. Why not call it an "elegant strategy"? @nytimes #mtbos #iteachmath #nixthetricks nyti.ms/2UthatG
What a fantastic way to improve a low level question! 👏🏻

It’s quadratic ball toss day. “That’s so satisfying.” #MTBoS #NatureWorks
This is what happens when students are introduced to algorithms at an early age. This 3rd grader believes this is the “one right way” leading him to believe that math is a subject of memorization and rules. @joboaler @mburnsmath #wresamath #elemmathchat
A4. I am a believer that if our students cannot write about it, draw it or explain it, they don't really get it - and that's even after them doing 25 perfectly accurate problems #elemmathchat
What if we spent the time we use to administer and grade “the mad math minute” to actually sit down with each child FOR a minute so we can listen to their thinking...just a thought. #elemmathchat
You never know what your students are going through. Take a moment or two and have a conversation with them. I often have to remind myself that these are 8-9 year old children. Yes, the state has us teach like they are older but they are children. Just love on them when you can.
So after reading Mathematical Mindsets a 2nd time, I am not writing a grade on students tests. I want them to look more at my marks. C for correct, PC for partially correct, NY not yet and highlighting mistakes. These marks have motivated some on their cool downs too. #openupmath
"Somehow it's O.K. for people to chuckle about not being good at math. Yet if I said, 'I never learned to read,' they'd say I was an illiterate dolt." — @NeilTyson #iteachmath #MTBoS
