Paired Electrons and Topology
@PETLab_CPfS
Our group at Max Planck Institute (MPI CPfS) studies paired and unpaired electrons that form energy bands with trivial or nontrivial topology.

Our new preprint is online! arxiv.org/abs/2512.04791 We observe anomalous charge modulations near surface impurities. This local symmetry-broken phase appears to arise from a subtle interplay between non-local impurity potentials, quantum geometry, and enhanced local correlations.

New PhD position: we are looking for an enthusiastic student to explore the uncharted territory of chiral superconductors, and to control their chirality by ultrafast laser pulses, in collaboration with Prof. Stefan Kaiser at TU Dresden. Apply now: imprs-cpqm.mpg.de/227377/Chiral-…
The coldest cubic meter in the universe just got quieter ❄️Using a “noise-canceling” algorithm, CUORE—led by @BerkeleyLab, @UCBerkeley & INFN—has set new limits on neutrinoless double beta decay, shedding light on why our universe exists at all. physics.berkeley.edu/news/new-data-…

Yesterday Shamarita presented a poster about Aharonov-Bohm caging in classical photonic simulators through Floquet engineering — her master work from TU Kaiserslautern — in the 2nd DPG Fall Meeting in Göttingen.
Welcome our new group member Lichen Ji, who recently got her PhD at Tsinghua University studying superconducting proximity effect. She joined us this month as a postdoc (shared with TQC Thin Films group) and she will explore chiral superconductors with molecular beam epitaxy.
Please share this with your colleagues: We are hiring a postdoctoral researcher specializing in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The deadline is in two weeks: cpfs.mpg.de/3716612/job_fu…
Here we go again! Time lapse of touchdown and assembly.
All boxes are open, and the cryogenic dewar is mounted on the vibration isolation table. Now comes the real heavy lifting — time to settle the system into the pit!
Today Dongming Zhao, our new postdoc who joined us earlier this month, gave an excellent introduction talk in TQC PhD and group seminar about his doctoral thesis on higher-order topological insulators. Welcome Dongming!
Today’s the big day — our STM has arrived! 🥳 All 7 crates📦are now safely stored in the basement. Huge thanks to everyone involved, and a special shoutout to our technician Ole for making it all run so smoothly. Unpacking will happen in a couple of weeks — stay tuned!

Congrats to the 2025 #ForWomenInScience Laureates! Special cheers to our Director, @claudia_felser, honored for her work on topological quantum materials & advocacy for women in STEM. 👏 Baker, Wang, Felser, Dova & Finlayson-Pitts — true role models! @UNESCO @FondationLOreal
This week Jacky is presenting our work at #QUANTUMatter2025 in the beautiful French Alps. In celebrating 100 years of quantum physics, we also contribute to it with our idea of tracking down 'poisoning' quasiparticles—a major issue in qubit operations—with atomic resolution.
The results of Prof. Ingmar Swart from Utrecht University (using USM1300 and the amplifier for shot noise) have been published on SciPost Phys. Check it out! #USM1300 #ShotNoise scipost.org/10.21468/SciPo…
🌟 Welcome to #QUANTUMatter2025! Let’s kick off an exciting week of cutting-edge #QuantumScience, innovation, and global collaboration in Grenoble! Stay curious, stay inspired — the future of quantum starts here. #QuantumTech #QuantumFuture #ScienceConference
We asked 5000 researchers what they thought of this behaviour. What do you think? Check out all of the questions here: nature.com/immersive/d415…
Welcome our first PhD student – Shamarita Deb! Shamarita finished her master's thesis on quantum simulation using coupled photonic waveguides at TU Kaiserslautern. Shamarita started last week in our group and will be working on imaging vortices in unconventional superconductors.
