I've long said that science is a blue collar job that codes white-collar. You work w/ your hands, mostly follow routines & protocols, wear lots of PPE, rangle animals (and cells). I'm confident that I could mentor anyone w/ a lick of common sense into being a good scientist.

Many of those "learn to code" re-training programs should've been "learn to biotech" programs. (They do exist. Maryland has a few.)

A lot of people seemed to have missed the "play with the numbers yourself" part. I picked some numbers, if you disagree, then show me your minimum viable poverty budget (and don't do the candles thing). Please, I'd genuinely like to see some!

Here's the hyper-conservative $40,000 poverty budget I made for a family of four. A single, paid-off, fuel-efficient car, no childcare, no savings, no vacations. Play with the numbers yourself, but the official Federal Poverty Line no longer reflects reality.

This will be the most vicious political fight we've seen in a while. Millennials and Gen Z aren't going to accept more taxes to subsidize the dying Boomers and Gen X. The bond market and inflation get a vote on more debt.

Stop going to Publix, start going to Costco.

This is one weeks worth of groceries for my family in 2025. We shop mostly BOGO and use leftovers frequently. Our monthly average is $3500-4000, no alcohol and eating out once a month. In 2020, our monthly budget for food was about $2200 and we ate out at least twice a week.…

I would not have predicted that Wayne spends more on utilities than me, granted he has a larger family and lives in a colder climate.

Dollars that left my bank account, Oct 13 2024 - Oct 13 2025. Note that we did buy a Honda Odyssey since I pulled these numbers, so you may add $16,500 to the total if you want.

If we all had kids in our 20s, this first point wouldn't be true.

I’d argue the age range of 35-45 is one of the most taxing mentally. - Your parents’ age begins to show - Friends groups splinters as some have kids, some don’t - Careers hit hiccups or strides - People you know die unexpectedly due to health issues - Friends develop substance…

I absolutely plan to raise my kids like it's the late 90s. I'm obviously biased, but it feels like the ideal balance of technology and ludditism.

I grew up in a really different time, obviously, but as kids we were never allowed to have a computer, TV, or phone in our bedroom. Our computer had dial-up and was by the living room. As parents in 2025, we basically try to raise our kids like it is 1995 when it comes to their…
