A little Friday musing... I recently had the good fortune to be able to spend a couple of months in Tokyo (a place where I'd previously lived for 15 years). People talk about Japan's stagnating economy. What few acknowledge (or maybe even realise?) is that it has stagnated at a…
A private conversation between James Cleverly and an unnamed senior civil servant about the #RwandaBill has been leaked: Cleverly: The purpose of this bill is to prevent and deter unlawful migration, in particular migration by unsafe and illegal routes. We'll do this by…
Slovenia's center-left government is refunding thousands of Covid lockdown fines issued by the previous right-wing administration. Justice Minister Dominika Švarc Pipan said repaying the fines would help to rebuild Slovenians' trust in the rule of law, "which was significantly…
Yesterday @RishiSunak told @BBCLookNorth that his government were ‘investing more’ in buses in SY. Today I’ve written to him to correct the record, to lay out the scale of the challenge facing our region and to explain how broken bus services are impacting our communities.
Science is very clear. It’s not net zero in 2050 that must be the headline goal, but cutting emissions before then, including 50% cut by 2030. Delaying action deepens peril for our children & grandchildren. Think Libya, Greece, mass migration & all the rest, & on a massive scale.
Rishi Sunak is poised to water down some of the government’s biggest net zero commitments, including plans to phase out the installation of new gas boilers and delaying a ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars thetimes.co.uk/article/rishi-…
PM totally incoherent. It’s nonsense to keep saying he’s still committed to net zero by 2050 if he’s abandoning the steps to actually achieve it. It’s like saying he’s committed to putting out the fire at the same time as letting down all the tyres on the fire engines #NetZero
An unnecessary jibe at EU trying to justify costly hard Brexit. Where I live in Eastern Europe beer is a third of the price of UK. The minimum excise duties set by EU and agreed by UK preBrexit are much lower than UK ones. Pity if UK public falls for this misleading claim.
Its not a solution to anything. Won't work, is costing the taxpayers a fortune and it is an abhorrent way to treat people.
On 1st May, the “Germany-Ticket” was introduced: Now you can take all public transport (apart from high-speed trains) for 49€/month. It is a HUGE success. In a month, 10 million tickets were sold. With 700.000 new public transport users. Greens making a difference 💚🚎🚆🚃
The trral is for only 30 people, but at least its a start! bbc.co.uk/news/uk-658065…

Universal basic income: Plans drawn up for £1,600 a month trial in England
Thirty people would get a monthly lump sum for two years, under a think tank's scheme in England.
To be very clear cheaper Australian beef for consumers = selling out British farmers.
🚨 Urgent: The Government has been ending vital local suicide prevention funding across England. This decision completely undermines their promise to deliver the suicide prevention strategy that we desperately need. 1/4
@DavidHenigUK: “It cannot be a good thing for our food to be labelled ‘not for consumption’ in neighbouring countries. It adds another layer of complexity to trading arrangements for NI if the UK is not aligning with EU food rules – but UK Govt has chosen to proceed in this way.”
Yet this is what new,y appointed FOM Oliver Dowden said of Sharp’s appointment. Does he still stand by his words.
Sunak seems determined to turn triumph into tragedy. Horizon membership would be a lifeline for UK universities and our science and research sector. It is a prize worth grasping with both hands, worth billions and with the potential to help our economy./1 politico.eu/article/uk-wei…

Don’t forget extra "Saving Our Wild Isles" episode on iPlayer after "Ocean" tonight. It's brilliant & vital - as #Attenborough himself says “This starts & ends with us”. We can protect & restore these #WildIsles if we choose - but Govt must step up & act newstatesman.com/culture/tv/202…
Food inflation is at a staggering 18%....just imagine how that impacts struggling families
NEW: Headline inflation number, the CPI for February is still in the double digits, defying City expectations it went UP to 10.4% rather than down… Biggest upward contribution from eating out
So this illegal & immoral #RefugeeBanBill passes second reading, 312 to 270, trashing international law, running roughshod over human rights, & shaming us all. It’s not refugees who are threat to this country, it’s the Tory government. But opposition will only grow #StopTheBill
