The inability to just dislike something without bending over backwards to justify your dislike has also done alot of damage 😔 like... You don't need to find a way to interpret it as bad or problematic and then attack anyone who enjoys it. You can just not fw it 🤷🏼♀️
you’re focusing on the wrong thing when this should be making you think and feel and want to discuss the complex emotions this genre is symbolism for. not argue with a stranger online about why this characters murderous rampage is okay but not that characters murderous rampage
never seen a fandom so opposed to its own genre and unable to accept they’re consuming something that is inherently about morally fucked up evil characters where it does not at all make sense to try to have a contest of which one is the least heinous😭 baby they eat people
of all the fandoms i see it the worst rn it’s somehow iwtv which is crazy bc this is gothic media with a source material all about morality, religious and spiritual philosophy and examining human nature and how contradictory it is. it’s supposed to make you think and feel things
talented and they never liked them. this need to distance from something that makes them uncomfortable, to not acknowledge the idea that talented people, beautiful people, people who made things you love, can be capable of doing bad things. like it’s so unhealthy
I see it even affect peoples relationships to celebrities where they can’t handle it when a celebrity they enjoyed fucks up bc now it’s somehow about them and their own morality. so they either turn a blind eye completely or flip a switch and have to claim that person was never—
or come up with a million justifications which sacrifice the integrity of the story, completely miss the point or just flat out butcher the characterization of their fave and everyone around them to make themselves feel more comfortable.
around 2014-2016 I really saw this pop up in droves where there’s this morality contest online to the point people act like it’s a reflection of their own character if they like something or someone who is bad or who has done something bad, so they try to rationalize it
the inability to enjoy morally grey characters and subject matters without feeling like you need to justify said enjoyment has really ruined fandom ability to properly interpret media

The concept of Proshipping on the internet has done an irreversible damage to peoples morals because now you would see minors online get more harassment over fiction than real pedophiles that did real life crimes
