If in doubt, card 'em

Very interesting article giving great insight to what referees go through

I've been wanting to write this for many, many years, because it's something I've always been curious about. Now it's finally here. Thanks, @davidedgarwolf theguardian.com/football/2023/…

Well done Chris Kavanagh

Fully agree. One possible middle ground would be referee chief giving a statement on Mondays to clarify points of law/procedure. But any interview or press conference would create more problems than it would solve

A lot to unpack in that Wolves v Leeds game. Lopetegui has a case on the penalty, but always a red for Jonny and not a foul on Traore before Leeds 4th goal. Nice to see a referee stick by their original decision after VAR recommended a review

There is no reason or excuse for players to encroach at a penalty. Poor discipline from the player and poor coaching. #CHEBVB

Yesterday was a poor day for officials in PL. But I don't think refs are 'worse' now than they used to be - at no time in football history has anyone ever claimed that the officials of the day are good. And never claim corruption when something can be explained by incompetence

Exactly this. Having a former ref as a pundit should be a great move, but Walton is terrible at explaining how or a why a decision is given

was a pen for me , dont think walton done a great job defining the rule

Paredes launches into a tackle and then smashes the ball in to the Dutch technical area. But apparently it is the referee has lost control 🤷‍♂️

The VAR review for a Uruguay penalty was not rejected for handball. It was because the referee felt Daniel Amartey got the ball. If it had been rejected for handball, play would have restarted with a free kick to Ghana in their penalty area. It didn't. #GHAURU #FIFAWorldCup

Undoubtedly a penalty. Uruguay players did well to make Ayew have to wait so long before taking it but referee needed to be stronger. He's viewed the replay so isn't changing his mind. Needs to clear the area quickly and speed up the restart.

Some offsides contain a subjective element. VAR would have told Anthony Taylor which player was in an offside position, and then he was sent to the monitor to determine whether that player was active or not #hrv #bel #FIFAWorldCup

The #ARG penalty is one that logically is a foul. Messi gets to the ball before Szczesny, and GK then clearly catches Messi in the face. However I don't think anyone expects (or wants) a penalty to be given for that.

Well done to Anthony Taylor for showing #KOR manager the red card. That level of abuse is unacceptable.

100% agree

tbf, not just bbc. And don't start on the role of asst ref and late flagging for offside. Ex.players as well, who would be apoplectic if game stopped for offside and proven to be onside

BBC commentators once again showing a complete lack of understanding of the laws. Accidental handball in lead up to a goal is only a factor if the player that scores handled it. Really isn't difficult yet they manage to get it wrong so often

Even if you don't think that is DOGSO, it is a red for serious foul play #Wal #Irn #FIFAWorldCup
