Fantastic decision by @nhmrc. Scientific publishing has become a $35 billion cartel like industry. The vast majority of publications are controlled by just 5 companies who put publicly funded research behind exorbitant paywalls. …eaustralian-com-au.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/amp.theaus…

Australia's leading researchers are forced to waste their time operating in an inefficient system. $500 million is squandered each year processing grant applications for a success rate of ~15%. The ARCs annual research fund is under $800 million. We need to do better. #research

45 cents are lost for every dollar of research funding due to inefficient research administration processes. Searten is building technology to solve this important issue. #research #Innovation #science afr.com/policy/health-…

Fix research funding system, implore universities

Australia has fallen well below the OECD average for investment in research and innovation. It spells trouble.

Investing in research is a guaranteed economic multiplier. We also need to streamline systems so SMEs and industry can easily invest. This will liberate hundreds of millions of dollars tied up in administration each year. This is our mission/ #research smh.com.au/politics/feder…

$5 return for every dollar invested in R&D, universities say

Universities Australia says economic modelling shows a 1 per cent increase in research investment could grow the Australian economy by $24 billion over a decade.

A more efficient research sector means we can save hundreds of millions each year that is spent processing grants. This is money that could be spent on research! This is our mission at Searten. #science #research #innovation

Reform should include investment in streamlined research and funding administration processes. Searten is developing systems to connect stakeholders through the grant lifecycle and eliminate unnecessary admin. #research

@Groupofeight is calling for a review of the research funding model for universities - relying on international student fee revenue to fund our national research effort is not sustainable. theaustralian.com.au/nation/politic… @SarsIson @Stuartrobertmp @tanya_plibersek

$2 Billion announced for research commercialisation. Hopefully this will take the pressure off @arc_gov_au linkage programs. The $780 mil needs to be increased too. Innovation comes from fundamental research. #research #innovation #industry theaustralian.com.au/nation/politic…

42% of researcher time is spent doing research and grant administration. 17 million researchers, 25,000 universities. Reforming inefficient research administration processes would give researchers their time back. Imagine giving 17 million researchers a day a back for research!

Thank you for sharing this story Alex. One of thousands that are very similar. The entire grant lifecycle process is a broken. We need an end-to-end system that supports the researcher rather than building a complex matrix of unconnected systems that doesn’t. We’re building this!

Finally hit submit on my second attempt at a #DECRA. How was the process? Brutal. 49 pages of the most intensely scrutinised and carefully thought out text. Edited and re-edited and re-edited (and then re-edited!) for clarity, accuracy, and precision. 1/9

Investment in research is one of the most consistent economic multipliers. We need more funding for research and better processes to make it easier to access. Linkage funding should be absorbed by Discover and a new, non-ARC translational fund should be created.

A funding boost is needed to move Australia closer to countries leading the world on R&D spending. bit.ly/3H3rhLi

Great analysis. This outlines much of the rationale for the Searten research management platform. We want to improve efficiency so that researchers have more time for actual research.

Stop funding research (the way you do) Because it is wasteful, unethical and unscientific A thread (1/16)

Yep - as I said, I been a beneficiary of the Linkage scheme. But that being said, I think it has run it's course. Move that funding mostly back into Discovery-larger investment in Discovery will pay back in spades for industry! And instead beef up CRC-P and other related schemes.

We need a better way to manage research administration in Australia. The recent DP issues are proof of this. linkedin.com/posts/searten_…

Australian reforms ostensibly designed to “strengthen the translational research pipeline” could undermine peer review of funding proposals and turn an already dysfunctional grant application process into a “Frankenstein’s monster”. timeshighereducation.com/news/arc-chang…

ARC changes ‘will undermine peer review’, say academics

Conscripting industry players into research assessment roles will also turn the grant application process into ‘Frankenstein’s monster’
