What progress doesn’t look like
The problem with American infrastructure at its deepest level, is not that the government is involved. It is that too many governments are involved. Federalism is a fine system in many ways, but it's a bad way to do transportation.
"Adherence to traffic signals went from 30% to 90% when actual bike traffic signals were installed in Chicago." - @gabe_klein People who relentlessly complain about cyclists "not following rules of road", should spend that energy on advocating for bike traffic signals. #WCC2019
Did you know the traffic engineering rule book won't allow cities to install crosswalks w/ traffic lights unless there are 93 pedestrians crossing per hour or 5 pedestrians are hit there in a single year? Seattle is challenging that rule usa.streetsblog.org/2019/02/05/sea…
Why can’t we build this safety feature into cars?
This is really cool, electric scooters now automatically slow down along the crowded beach path in Santa Monica
I just saw a traffic light 🚦 freeze and turn off completely. Wtf. #Chiberia
One surprising finding from this year’s #MeninoSurvey: Mayors say traffic accidents are the top health issue for which constituents hold them accountable. Ahead even of gun violence, lead, hunger, addiction & other important concerns @bill_lucia surveyofmayors.com
“The bottom line is that we are killing more people walking,” according to Emiko Atherton of @completestreets routefifty.com/infrastructure…

People Aren’t Walking More. But More Pedestrians Are Getting Killed.
The trend appears to be especially troublesome in the South, and for minorities and lower-income communities.
“Driving is the most likely way we’ll kill someone else. But we’re not treating cars like the dangerous things that they are.” 53eig.ht/2CWuf5w
You've seen it on the metro Denver highway signs: Nearly 600 traffic deaths this year. Nearly 600. Think about that. Why are we so numb to such high numbers? ow.ly/IalJ30mZspr @MobilityLabTeam
This is why lowering speed limits in cities - as those committed to pedestrian safety have already done - works. Your cone of vision as a driver narrows the faster you drive. Drivers need to see street life, so they can react to it. Pic HT @JeffSpeckAICP
"When you see it nationally it’s somewhat astounding ... On a weekly basis, today, we have 20 to 30 incidences combined between grade crossing and trespasser incidences, that represent anywhere between 10 to 15 deaths a week.” routefifty.com/smart-cities/2… via @routefifty
Four-way stops are more pedestrian friendly than traffic signals. They're cheaper for cities to operate too, says @JeffSpeckAICP usa.streetsblog.org/2018/10/30/for…
"The cost to implement these intersection redesigns ranges from a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars, drastically less than the tens or hundreds of thousands spent on typical street-redesign projects." qz.com/1315305/one-sm…
Extremely comprehensive, well-said piece in the @HoustonChron detailing the traffic safety challenges we see in regions across the country and showing need for better enforcement – both traditional & automated. Thanks to @DugBegley & @stjbs for writing. bit.ly/2wMkX7R
Upper Midwest states generate around ⅓ of the nation’s new ideas, technologies, and talent, but attract less than 5% of venture capital investment brook.gs/2BoYxzt
Hmmm, either wearing a helmet is dangerous or living in a country with good infrastructure for cyclists is safe.....🙄
Red light running crash deaths rose 17% from 2012 to 2016. ht.ly/c5zR30lmKkn #StoponRed2018
Pedestrian fatalities have surged 46% since reaching their lowest point in 2009. A total of 5,987 pedestrian fatalities in 2016. May get worse, with more bicyclists, scooters, segways. etc. crowding the sidewalk. Act for safety locally! -R
