Not going to deactivate my Twitter account just yet, and will keep it open as a means of contact, but think I'm going to mostly be over at Bluesky for now.

Italo Calvino in his short story The Watcher, based on his experience as a poll watcher in post-war Italy, has a cute passage where he contrasts the "humble, gray unadorned dress" of democracy to the florid display and sickly pageantry of fascism.

Absolute pleasure to see the 4k restoration of Seven Samurai on the big screen yesterday - if you're a fan of the film it's a must see (they've cleaned up the rather beaten up old print beautifully). If you've not seen it before, what are you waiting for? youtu.be/GWhUEKyTU6I?si…

Still one of the best TV shows ever made.

“Oh my god I’ve got some fucking Jaffa Cakes in my coat pocket.” 'Spaced' was first shown on @Channel4 on September 24th, 1999. Thanks to Simon & Jess for believing in me to direct the whole thing at 24! If you worked on it or watched it back then, thank you x

Feeling like your friends are letting you down is a common one that I don't see talked about enough. A sure sign for me that someone is depressed.

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.

All this NaNoWriMo stuff has got me good and angry, so here's a brief🧵on why I hate AI in writing. Like many authors, I had my brain utterly rewired by genre fiction in my teens, and from about the age of 12 I suffered the constant and urgent compulsion to write fiction.

This essay on AI is almost cathartic in the way that it captures and confirms so eloquently how so many of us feel. I think Mr. Chiang has gifted us with something that will be referenced and talked about for a long time. Send it to everyone you know.
