My bro got me a ticket to see a screening of the original FINAL DESTINATION last night and I cackled at the John Denver references. I don't think anyone understood why. Those who know know.

I neglected to mention I may have an episode or two coming out taking a skeptical look at the Warrens of THE CONJURING fame. At least one ep, with Skeptical Inquirer's Benjamin Radford, is already in the can.

Bunch of spooky season episodes coming out including: Journo Steve Chain on the Twilight Zone movie scandal/true crime case Nathan Wardinski on DISSECTING CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST Screenwriter Stephen Johnston on writing serial killer biopics Alexander Herbert on Soviet horror movies

Always and forever

Isn’t this just culture wars driven by elites ratcheting up and up to their natural conclusion.

Elite narratives that avoid looking at material production? Yes.

Both MAGA and woke are part of the crisis of hegemony that elites faced over the past decade.

The Nobel Peace Prize has always been a farce since its inception as a means to assuage the guilty conscience of a bourgeois explosives manufacturer.

Extremely Unpopular Cinephile Opinion: I like that Rob Zombie always casts his wife, Sheri Moon, in his movies. Reminds me of Jess Franco's thing with Lina Romay. Always found Franco/Romay's relationship and the way he obviously adores her to be cute.

All movies/TV shows about serial killers basically are irrelevant after Matthew Bright's TED BUNDY. He basically stuck a stake into the heart of America's mythologizing of serial killers. This season of MONSTER sounds like maybe that's what Murphy wanted to do but failed.

The Ed Gein Story explores some interesting ideas, particularly the way Hollywood turned a sick man into a mythical monster, but it all amounts to watching someone tastelessly play with action figures of celebrities, historical figures & murderers. A baffling endeavor by the end.

CHH hits on this a bit in the video below, but I think it's always worth pointing out that Lynch isn't as inaccessible as ppl make him out to be. He's certainly more accessible to a broader audience than say Bela Tarr, Elias Merhige's BEGOTTEN, or even Catherine Breillat, imho.

FREDDY'S DEAD isn't a fav, but I'm glad a John Waters acolyte made an Elm Street movie & it makes me laugh that some ppl get their feathers so ruffled over it. Has @rtalalay talked about Waters' sensibility in relation to her own? I do think they're distinct, but there's overlap.

FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE director @rtalalay reflects on fan reactions.

Calling someone a cultural philistine OR a cultural snob is part of the same social game. It's all about positioning one's social identity, class markers, etc. That's the social function of distinctions of taste. Bourdieu figured it all out. That's why no one talks about him.

"performative philistinism" is sly social climbing, the inverse of calling someone a culture vulture x.com/davidclarkphel…

Also, if it isn't clear, I'm not knocking DIE HARD either. Or, as another example, pulp novels vs. László Krasznahorkai novels. But that should go without saying.

I despise snob vs. philistine debates as it's all part of a distinctions of taste social game, but Ganz is more right than Thompson, who reminds me of people that'd write off Laszlo's frequent collaborator Béla Tarr as "artsy fartsy" b/c god forbid a film isn't DIE HARD.

Don't really understand who this performative philistinism is even for. Like, "oh, I'm a big data nerd, but maybe the bullies won't beat me up if I make fun of the artsy kids"

This feels true, but also distinctions of taste and what comes with that has existed for years now, including prior to social media. At least now you have academics that are assessing films outside the usual suspects (worthy as they are) like CITIZEN KANE.

There's a weird hive mind attitude towards films now. It's less what you feel but more how you align with how everyone else feels. It's definitely the effect of social media. These will be very embarrassing reads years from now.
