Disability accessibility is not a nice treat for the poor, unfortunate disabled. It is one of the first steps to building a more just, equitable and inclusive society.

Some people: “let’s have a call - it’d be more personal than all these messages/emails!” Autistic me: *is confused, because my written communication is very personal. I put so much thought & effort into it, making it (typically) my most authentic and personal form of expression.

Excited to be attending and presenting at my first ever in-person conference! #sunyla2023

There’s a common thread linking the decline in humanities majors, Hollywood paying its writers pennies and the tech world wanting all writers and painters to be replaced by machines. We’ve entirely forgotten how essential the arts and literature are to a healthy society.

So much of ableism under capitalism emerges out of two assumptions: (1) disability is the worst burden that could ever befall a person because it limits productivity, and 2) should disability happen to you, it’s naturally your own burden to bear because care is a commodity.

We #ActuallyAutistic folks are constantly berated by NTs with the question “what are you soooo tired from? You don’t work harder than me!”. Well, NO. It’s absolutely hard to just live as an #autistic person in an NT world. The brain power and energy to just wake up is exhausting.

Without Judy’s work I would have been unable to go through school and now work. Disabled people are people too and deserve the same education as everyone else. Accommodations do not mean “special” or “extra” it allows us to have an equal playing board. Rest in Power Judy Heumann.

45 years ago today was the 11th day of the 504 Sit-In. Congressmen Miller and Burton came to the HEW building for a hearing and I was one of several demonstrators who provided testimony.

I’m pro-meds for those meds help. I’m anti-meds for those meds harm. I’m pro-CBT for those CBT helps. I’m anti-CBT for those CBT harms. I’m pro-mindfulness for those mindfulness helps. I’m anti-mindfulness for those mindfulness harms. I’m anti-ABA. Always.

My student is conducting a scoping review on autistic wellbeing. Of the >3500 papers we screened, most take measures of wellbeing of the PARENT/CARER. Not the autistic person. That tells you all you need to know about most traditional autism research.

You cannot have diversity without disabled people. You cannot have equity without disabled people. You cannot have inclusion without disabled people. You cannot have civil rights without disabled people. You cannot have human rights without disabled people.
