#LongShot - does anyone have any photos of the #StKilda #Gannet colonies from AUGUST of ANY year? We've collected some photos this month and would be interested to compare with other years as part of out effort to understand the impact of #birdflu. #citsci #NTSSeabirds
Great Skua populations have increased in the UK since 1900. However, the species is currently facing the harsh effects of Avian Influenza. In a recent @_BTO blog, we hear how long-term monitoring is as important as ever in informing conservation action. 👉bit.ly/HPAI_blog
A sad day on Friday with the realisation that #avianinfluenza is clearly affecting the #StKilda Puffin population too. Up to 11 dead Pufflings outside burrows around the colony fringes so far. @smp_seabirds @N_T_S @nature_scot @JNCC_UKseabirds
The #shelduck continue to surprise! After 10 days on the Dee, this adult male moved to the Wadden Sea, ignoring east coast moult sites. He's done the reverse of my flight in April, passing lots of offshore wind farms & gas platforms. See all tracks on shelducks.co.uk/gps-tracking/ #phd
Buzzing after my flight back from #CWW2022. Followed Shelduck mig route from Wadden Sea -> @WWTMartinMere. Saw moult sites @ both ends & the wind farms that are working hard to offset my carbon miles. Birds eye view will help me interpret my results though! #phdlife @_BTO @SEG_UL

Fully support @_BTO call for collaboration and enhanced monitoring of population dynamics, movements and #avianflu effects in #seabirds to address this crisis. We must eke out every insight from the data we have, and plan how to fill significant knowledge gaps. #ornithology

Welcome news that NatureScot has established a task force in response to the impact of avian flu on our #seabirds. The timing of this outbreak could have far reaching effects on our seabird populations & a national co-ordinated response is a much needed step.
NatureScot will lead a new taskforce to co-ordinate a national response to the avian influenza crisis. The group will draw on experience from government, conservation orgs, local authorities & researchers to drive a collective response to the crisis. More: ow.ly/bcJB50JVG1a
Terrible and getting worryingly close to @ShiantIsles
More worrying Bird Flu news. Till recently it was mainly east coast colonies being affected. There are now signs that it is spreading to west coast colonies. At the weekend 8 ringed adult Guillemots from Canna were picked up dead on Skye and 1 at Arisaig.
How does one define a pond? I’ve pondered it myself, especially when looking at @OrdnanceSurvey’s AddressBase classifications…:
What is a pond?! We’re excited to announce our new publication rdcu.be/cP6tH in @SciReports that compiles existing scientific and legal pond definitions, compares how ponds functionally compare to lakes and wetlands, and proposes an evidence-based pond definition. 1/n
