the easiest way to look at relationship problems is through cosmic nihilism send the text, confess your love, break up, say yes, say no, walk up to the stranger when you remember how insignificant each choice really is, the stress around any single decision dissolves

The tall old man in the photo is named Lin Shigong(林世功). After Japan annexed Ryukyu in 1876, he was sent by the Ryukyu King to China as an envoy to seek help from China. However, the Qing Dynasty of China was too weak to have a war with Japan, and refused him. He ultimately…

Einstein's father shared his son's anguish and tried, in a painfully sweet manner, to help Einstein find a job when he was getting rejected everywhere. This is what he wrote to a senior scientist, Wilhelm Ostwald, who never replied.

I like how the current moment has elements of railroad boom (investment in new era infrastructure like hyperscaler datacenters requiring heavy capex), dot com bubble (Mag-7 driven stock market) and the pre-GFC style financial innovation (private credit) all rolled into one.

I mentioned this on one of the recent episodes, maybe Sunday's with Dirk Willer, but one problem with the attempts to compare this market to 1999 is that so much of the action market-cap wise is happening in private markets. Can't cleanly compare how much mcap is profitable.

Our country does not need to revolve around the tweets of an American president or VP, that we seem to convulse every time they mention us proves the point that we're "obsessed." If we want to be independent we need to try and develop something like "consciousness sovereignty."

no one wants to hear this because it’s not nice and cozy but a thing that can matter most *for a career* (as opposed to wellbeing during a phd) may actually be their star power and willingness to use it to intervene at key junctures especially near or right after completion

Right wing Sinophiles in the West who like China as a civilization state and simply see the PRC as its most recent iteration are ironically China’s best friends. but they are a dime in a dozen which China should carefully cultivate.

At my age my parents had a six bedroom semi-detached house with a 70ft garden and a Ferrari parked in the double garage. I eat a packed lunch out of some tupperwear I stole off my mum so I can put the heating on for an extra hour. I don’t “think” anything.*
