Some professional news: After 11 years of columnizing at WaPo, I'm taking the buyout. This is my last column. It is my advice to any other lucky pundits who land a perch like this—11 principles I've aspired to, even if I haven't always achieved them: wapo.st/3TU2fGw
Citizen: What do you mean overstay? ICE: An overstay. Citizen: I don’t know what that is! ICE: Where were you born? And don’t lie to me. Citizen: I’m from California! ICE: Don’t lie to me. Where were you born? Citizen: California ICE: Ok, so we’re gonna take you in and verify…
ICE agents to US citizen: Turn around or you're getting the dog.
Here are the highest average tariff rates in the world (US is now at or above ~15%). Notice anything?

Very exciting hire at @BulwarkOnline — @crampell, who recently left WaPo, is coming on board! semafor.com/article/10/05/…
Pumped to welcome new mom @crampell to The Bulwark, focusing on economics. Couldn’t imagine a better fit for us, I’m very excited to chop it up with her soon. semafor.com/article/10/05/…

Two senior Republican appropriators agree it doesn't make any sense for Democrats to agree to a government funding deal unless Trump actually adheres to the deal. The Democratic alternative CR had language that would address this, but the White House came out strongly against.

OMG. The circumstances of this arrest are even worse than the brief summary. Mr. Molina, who was here legally, says he DID tell immigration officials that he had papers — and in response a federal agent said "No you don't. You are illegal" and "Shut up, bitch! You're illegal."

WOW. The lead plaintiff is a Latino man who's been here legally for 24 years. He was grabbed off the street by plainclothes federal agents who didn't even ASK about his status. He was detained overnight and only released once a supervisor realized he had been illegally arrested.

As a parent, I empathize with this, but if this is your priority you should probably rethink taking a job as the head of FEMA!!!!!

Here's a different explanation, from a loyal Democrat: Zohran's policies are bad and unpopular with the general electorate, and his self-framing as a Democratic Socialist seems calibrated to get Democrats smashed in national elections.
This explains the NY Democratic Leadership's resistance to Zohran in a sentence.
Just gonna start posting every night that Kay Graham published the second tranche of Pentagon Papers in the middle of an IPO, at the same time Nixon was threatening to pull her FCC licenses.
RIP U.S. innovation. Between gutting the H-1B program, purging US scientists from civil service, slashing research grants, and disappearing international students off the streets, our government has made a conscious decision to kill America's role as a global leader in science…
Roughly 90 percent of counties that are significantly reliant on government transfer programs — meaning that more than 25 percent of their total income came from transfers — went to Trump in 2024. What other trends do we find when we scrutinize the data? [1/9] 🧵

Less regulations, higher output, lower prices: an Abundance success story!

"The number of Americans missing work for National Guard deployments or other military or civic duty is at a 19-year high, adding disruption to a labor market that’s already under strain." Pretty remarkable for a country that's not at war (with others). washingtonpost.com/business/2025/…

"French pensioners now have higher incomes than working-age adults" - extraordinary By @jburnmurdoch

The Hyundai raid in a nutshell went like this: - Visa applicants: Hey State Department, can we get approved so we can work at the Hyundai plant? - State: Sure - Visa applicants: Hey CBP, we're seeking entry to work at the Hyundai plant. - CBP: Ok - Visa applicants:…
4/ Chosun calls the situation "bewildering" and emphasises the contradiction: Trump pressures Korean companies to invest while simultaneously arresting their workers. The editorial questions whether American investment promises survive across different administrations.
