This paper by Feller is a key starting point for diffusion approaches & a great illustration of two principles of effective writing -It doesn’t obfuscate ideas with any more math than really necessary -It’s clear, narrative, expository writing anchored in helpful examples 1/2

There exist a great channel called ''physics with Alexander Fufaev'' which does a great job at giving intuitive explanations on key topics in physics. A great example is this video where Gauss divergence theorem is explained in the simplest possible form Link in comments

After reviewing 500+ papers for top journals, I've cracked the code on perfect scientific paper structure. The anatomy of a scientific paper nobody tells you about. Think of your paper as a story: • Abstract = movie trailer • Introduction = opening scene • Methods = behind…
I don't recall another time in CS history where a result like this is obvious to the point of banality to one group. And heretical to another.
LLMs are trained on much more than the whole Internet -- they also consume handcrafted answers produced by armies of highly qualified data annotators (often domain experts). Today approximately 20,000 people are employed full-time to produce training data for LLMs.
mini rant: the illusion LLMs are intelligent comes from their massive scale. it is hard to visualize, but these things memorized the WHOLE internet. everything you've ever asked it, either has been solved before, or is a simple combination of existing solutions. but that's still…

I regret to report that the secret to making friends in your 30s is to go out and do things and then ask the people there if they would like to go out again and do more things
Gigantyczny skok... w przepaść. To wzrost poniżej inflacji. @NCN_PL grozi zamykanie konkursów, pracownicy w @PAN_akademia dostają mniej niż minimalna krajowa, a niektorym świetnym instytutom grozi bankructwo, brak mowy o podwyżkach... Idze idze bajoku...
🎓🔴 W 2024 roku przeznaczyliśmy 7 miliardów zł więcej na 🇵🇱polską naukę. To jest gigantyczny skok. To najlepiej pokazuje jaki jest nasz stosunek do 🇵🇱polskiej nauki, rozwoju, badań, innowacji, do rozwoju uczelni. - Minister Nauki @wieczorekdarek.
Could this be related to the fact that Central & Eastern European countries tend to receive almost no ERC grants? (I'm reminded of a podcast in which two ERC laureates agreed that connections & recognition were more important in ERC than in the National Science Center in Poland.)

Pretty strong evidence of negative mental health effects of doing a PhD. Recent working paper by @EvaRanehill, @annahsandberg, Sanna Bergvall, and Clara Fernström. Paper link: swopec.hhs.se/lunewp/abs/lun…
Jama Psychiatry paper finds if your classmates have a mental disorder, you're more likely to get one later in life. Conclusion: mental disorders are *socially contagious*. More plausible conclusion: authors didn't control for all relevant confounders. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamap…
#brms hack of the day: I have a nonlinear "mechanistic" model y~f(x,p1,p2,...), with parameters p1, p2, ... themselves depending on a predictor x. Don't know exactly about this relationship. Then I can model p1~s(x), p2~s(x), ... as GAMs to learn about this dependencies 🤯
