I worked at his previous company vk.com and I can tell that the secret to this is having extremely simple architecture and writing as much stuff as possible yourself, without relying on 3rd party stuff, even for databases.

My guess would be that SQLite uses default fsync flags which do not guarantee that anything is persisted on the disc on MacOS

SQLite's WAL mode is fast fast. (This was run on my macbook pro. ~95% reads/ 5% writes)
