Hiking the same trail many times can still bring surprises. A beautiful sunrise to start. Took a different fork that's very overgrown and took some time to clear the trail. Happened upon some bear scat. Sage enjoyed himself on the 8.5 mile trek.
We often think of toughness as being able to persist. But it's also having the self-awareness to quit. A climber who is near the summit but recognizes that he doesn't have the energy to get down if he pushes to the top is tougher than the one who persists & risks their life.
Sage and I went for a 5 1/2 mile hike along the Payette River this afternoon. We got poured on twice but it was still great. He's such a good dog and seems to like hiking with me. I hope he forgives me for those times that the conditions are less than ideal.
Tried to drive up to Sage Hen Reservoir but the road was still snowed in. Decided to just hike up one of the other Forest Service roads and was not disappointed. Heavily mossed out tree! Got a nice view of Tripod Peak Lookout. Got snow/hailed on. Wonderful day.

We got about 3 inches of snow overnight. I think Sage was just a little excited by it.
Went to Julie Creek today. Rain or snow was a possibility and sure enough, we got snowed on! In May! After going about 4.5 miles, I looked back and saw serious clouds rolling in. On the way back, we went down to the Deadwood River and chilled.
All manager advice boils down to this: You're gonna have to ask your team to do things that some on your team won't like. So build trust. Supprt, protect, and empower your team so that when you need to ask them to go into the fire with you, they'll follow you in. It's hard.
What a good boy! We went to one of my favorite places - Zimmer Creek. Did 5.75 miles with 1500 feet of gain. Both of us will sleep well tonight.
