This is true--early exascale FOAs read like MPI would be dead by 2021 and nodes would be detonating randomly every 30 seconds. None of that was ever going to happen, but now people seem to think *that's* what a paradigm shift looks like. It takes away from the real work.
Porting to new systems and addressing new bottlenecks does take time & effort. A lot of language in grants though led one to believe that by the time we reached exascale the whole stack of development would be completely foreign to a petascale developer. That didn't really happen

Understanding the practical utility of quantum computing requires close collaboration between QC specialists and industry domain experts. Our recent work with BBVA (arxiv.org/abs/2105.12087) is one such example. We hope such detailed resource estimation will be useful elsewhere!
