take every one of my brunches away never let me have peace and quiet again give me just enough income to live on take it all because kids are worth all of that and so much more

When you watch stuff like this as a parent, you realise how truly empty and meaningless all of those things are.

> Never lend money to family or close friends. Instead gift it to them, and if they pay you back, consider it a pleasant surprise. Can vouch for this. I wonder how many have learned this lesson themselves through painful experience

Advice to men in their 20s: 1. Get better at speaking. Do embarrassing stuff like record yourself, Toastmasters, study good speakers and try to emulate them to try out their verbal techniques and see how they fit you. Charisma is the omni-skill. 2. Drink less, or not at all. It…

Pondering while waiting for Android Studio to sync with Gradle files... For the programmers who love dynamically typed languages, how much of a factor is simply being able to keeping coding with minimal interruptions? I suspect that alone swamps any input from the language's…

Gravity powered descent system sounds like a euphemism for falling

In South Korea, high-rise buildings now include compact, gravity-powered descent systems hidden behind walls or balconies.

The prophecy is finally coming true! Microsoft and Apple have been fumbling their offerings for developers, so now is the perfect time to simply decide to try Linux. It literally takes as little as two minutes to install!! youtube.com/watch?v=GQJZ96…

FYI. Voice memos drive me crazy. They shift all the work from sender to receiver. You hit record and ramble for 3 minutes while I’m stuck listening with no way to skim. You’re trading YOUR efficiency for MY time, and if you keep choosing your convenience over mine, don’t be…

The most valuable use I've found for generative AI so far is helping write small bash scripts - a syntax I've never spent the time to master. I'm starting to build a bit of a collection of small useful tools now, it's great.

If I ever give up on computers as a career, it'll be to start a line of home appliances that just have great big knobs, boring-but-reliable internals, and premium utility. Like an old Lexus. Toyota reliability under the hood, lovely leather, and ready to drive a million miles!

Huge respect for the people that manage to get up early to go to the gym before work consistently. I find this aspect harder than the actual workouts and it's not even close

To anyone else infuriated by this change in Android 15, someone has thankfully gone to the effort of reviving the old DnD tile as an open source 3rd party app here: play.google.com/store/apps/det…

Simple DND -- Do Not Disturb - Apps on Google Play

The missing do not disturb quick settings tile.

Hi @madebygoogle re the recent change to Quick Settings on Pixels that replaces Do Not Disturb with an intermediate Modes menu. When I want to put my phone in DnD mode, I want to do it quickly. Now there are more taps needed. How do I get the DnD quick setting back?

TV shows are like coffee in that it's easy to become accustomed to mediocrity and forget how good they can be. Until you come across a good one again and remember (we're watching Better Call Saul lately).

Life hack that has reliably improved my sleep quality: leaving my phone in another room overnight.

Set up a small home server/NAS last week - a Raspberry Pi 5 running Open Media Vault and NextCloud, with a couple of SSDs in RAID 1. Setting it up was pretty straightforward and enjoyable. Now I wish I'd set one up years ago - we keep finding more and more uses for it.
