Is there a name-calling orthographic linguist who can explain why ‘intellectual’(n) is spelled differently than ‘know-it-all’(n)?
We want the same thing! Hopefully it won’t take too long for the Canadian education system to realize how many lives can be saved with early screening and intervention.
There's such a focus on "future skills" in #Canadian prov. curriculums whilst ignoring research on the NEED to read (now & in future) & ignoring science re. HOW children learn to read... @CCMEC too many students AND educators are being/will be needlessly failed! #LadderOfReading
My Google must be broken, @GinaCookeLEX. Two pages of search results reveal neither a mention of “orthographic linguistics” nor of “orthographic phonology” outside the circle of SWI/RealSpelling/Ramsden devotees.
How does one come to understand there is <o> and there is <ugh>, but there is no <ough>? I am interested in the distinction between phonics and ‘orthographic phonology’.

Sad but true statement, @Sflecce you have the power to turn this around! #SayDyslexiaOntario
In Canada we are so far away from universal screening for dyslexia. The issue is not yet on the political radar. If this is a public health issue, perhaps dyslexia screening should be the domain of our Ministry of Health, considering the inaction of educationalists here.🇨🇦
@Sflecce @JillDunlop1 @celliottability @coteau @aarts_michelle @ONBIDA @dyslexiaON We all care about kids. We know dyslexia rates are roughly 1 in 7. There is a school to prison pipeline..,anxiety, mental health concerns, etc. Can we not all work together to help these children?

The ‘synthetic’ vs. ‘analytic’ phonics distinction has been important when discussing evidence-based reading instruction. A more useful distinction might now be ‘bottom-up’ vs. ‘top down’. parkerphonics.com/post/why-synth…
There is research, and there’s empirical research. When you’re trying to solve the hardest learning problems, you need empirical research. [New Post] 10 Reasons Why Thinking Reading Gets Striking Results ow.ly/221w30p6rvK
From the perspective of the bottom line: early ID and intervention means costs will be lower d/t less need for SpecEd, and less $ into both the mental health and criminal justice systems. From a perspective of the human cost: priceless. @ONBIDA @RenuMandhane
So badly want to write a poem about an orange No matter how hard I think I can't rhyme with orange After trying all day I'd quietly slink away Except for this rusty door hinge
