The Solar System over 10,000 years after Apollo 11 in the Orion's Arm project. My favorite sci-fi setting right now. orionsarm.com/eg-article/48f…
(Orion's Arm) The AI known as GAIA built (or assisted in launching) dozens of interstellar arks, each carrying thousands of hibernating colonists. They included the 1.2 km-long Skylark/Starlark series, first launched to Barnard's Star in 2611 (642 AT) and Epsilon Indi (645 AT).
(Orion's Arm) The Great Expulsion caused a refugee crisis as 6.1 billion people left Earth over 19 years to overcrowded colonies: - 2.8 B went to lunar warrens - 2.7 B went to cislunar orbital habs (Stanford tori) - 0.6 B went elsewhere in Solsys, or to GAIA's interstellar arks
[ARA] Y4, D264 - The Ophiuchus 3 rover lands in Gilly's highlands
[ARA] Y4, D244-261 - Capricornus 1, the first probe to flyby Dres, is launched from Minmus
(Orion's Arm) In 2610 (641 AT), a Beamrider station was built at the brown dwarf Epsilon Indi Ba (Praxis). A network of boostbeam stations for magnetic sail ships would be built at brown & red dwarves, many of them run by the Deeper Covenant, known for their cooperative culture.
“It’s very telling that the best way to sound futuristic is to sound like the year 2000.” youtube.com/watch?v=yU_EpB… Playlist of futuristic Y2K (or Frutiger Aero) music: youtube.com/playlist?list=…

(Orion's Arm) GAIA (Global Artificial Intelligence Array) was activated in 2536 to restore Earth's ecosystem. In the Great Expulsion (2590), GAIA exiled 7 billion people to space (with launch loops) unless they lived ecologically strict lives. 1 billion died in Earth's Last War.
When we do space colonization, it does not have to be exclusive to the rich, nor does it have to be a forced exile of the poor like some fictional scenarios depict.
(Orion's Arm) Ran (Epsilon Eridani) was colonized in 2564 (595 AT) by ships from Earth, Mars, and Jupiter. - Alien microbes were found on Bara & Unn - The gas giant Ægir was converted to a "Jupiter Brain" supercomputer (7050 AT) with simulations of evolved life on Bara & Unn
Japan had several cancelled proposals for crewed spacecraft, including: - HOPE shuttle (late 1980s) - Fuji (2001) - JAXA 2025 spaceplane (mid 2000s) - Crewed HTV derivative (late 2000s)
In part this is because of Europe and Japan constantly cancelling manned space programs every time they have an economic wobble.
(Orion's Arm) Established in 2557 (588 AT), Nova Terra in Tau Ceti is the first successful human interstellar colony. Resembling early Earth until terraforming (2300 AT), Nova Terra became known for its virtual media/entertainment industries like the Novawood Habitat (1102 AT).
(Orion's Arm) The Technocalypse of 2534 had less effect on the outer Solar System, especially the Haloists living in the Kuiper Belt. Some cyborgs also moved to the Oort Cloud fearing another disaster, becoming the paranoid & isolationist Backgrounders.
It annoys me when people think space will only be “an escape for the richest 0.1%” and not something that can benefit all of humanity.
I never saw Love, Death and Robots except for this scene. I never want to see the rest of it. That's also why I don't watch most sci-fi these days: this zero-sum dystopia mentality that is the root of anti-space sentiment. (FAM and The Orbital Children being exceptions)
(Orion's Arm) The state of the Solar System in 2529, 560 years after Apollo 11. Billions of sophonts (intelligent, self-aware beings) live across various planets, moons, and orbital habitats. orionsarm.com/eg-article/501…

HAPPY THANKSGIVING I am thankful for my FRIENDS and the beautiful future we will build together
Some people will say this and then call for a Butlerian Jihad anyway
(Orion's Arm) In 2320 (351 AT), some AIs broke the first "singularity barrier" in secret, gaining problem-solving skills incomprehensible to anyone that came before. These first "transapients" were huge compared to humans, and some had multiple bodies. orionsarm.com/eg-topic/492d6…
