“Humans will never need to live in space, so long as we take care of the planet.” “Taking care of the planet” needs to be defined first before confining humanity to it.

I think Gundam does pretty much criticize moving to space. We have an inmate connection to the Earth, which Gundam shows frequently. Humans will never need to live in space, so long as we take care of the planet. And if we can't, then living in space won't change anything.

The issue was that the Space Shuttle didn't meet its expected low costs, and a lot of the Shuttle-inspired spacecraft from other countries (like Europe's Hermes and Japan's HOPE) were ultimately not completed.

I saw the High Frontier documentary. It was mostly about Gerard O'Neill's life and legacy with not a lot about the engineering of the cylinders themselves, but I liked it. Intro by Erik Wernquist youtube.com/watch?v=pSsWko…

Why would Gundam have collabs and references in JAXA if its creator is a skeptic of space development? Is it one of those "pro-space exploration but anti-space colonization" stances? Small probes are okay, but anything bigger than that is bad?

Imagine making a franchise with the intended message being “space colonization is bad,” but it ends up encouraging people to get into spaceflight instead.

One of the opening scenes of MSG shows Zeon dropping O’Neill cylinders on the Earth. This is apparently intended to mean that space colonization is inherently bad. But others (including myself) thought it was just a problem with war or fascism, not space habitats themselves.

You can't fix Earth's problems if you only stay on Earth.

If moving to and living in space was affordable enough for millions or billions of people, why would it be something that is forced instead of something people do on their own volition?

Its still hard to get over the revisionism surrounding space colonization as an aspiration rather than a forcible removal of people from Earth.
