The first step was to find a script. I had a couple of options: 1/ write the script myself 2/ find an existing script 3/ commission someone to write a script

Going to try an experiment. I'm shooting a short film, and I'm going to try live tweeting the production process. Never produced a short film or live tweeted, so this could all go terribly wrong. Reader discretion is definitely advised. Will try to keep everything organized by…

A point I've heard both Carl and Gwern make is that with primates, evolution finally found both a scalable brain architecture AND a niche that rewarded marginal increases in intelligence. Some birds are really smart for the size of the brains. But they're in a niche that…

I often return to this idea from @dwarkesh_sp's interview with Carl Shulman: When humans got smart enough they began cooking food to externalize digestion, freeing up energy for even larger brains. Wild example of intelligence-driven recursive self-improvement in nature.

Harrison Ford is 82 years old, but he gave one of the best performances of his life in the latest season of Shrinking. Like where did this come from? Similar to De Niro, Ford’s late-stage work astonishes me. He’s still so sharp & still has so much endurance in his 80s. A legend.

This is one of the most spellbinding anecdotes I've ever read, and it’s just Ray Bradbury rambling about a carnival worker he met when he was twelve. “He said, ‘You were my best friend outside of Paris in 1918. You were wounded in the Ardennes and you died in my arms there.’”

This is my favorite story from all my years of teaching: A student said, "I want to go back in time and take Shakespeare's quill so he could never write a word. He doesn't speak *my* language." I said, "Let's sit down and talk about it." The student said he was frustrated by…

This captures the theme of Solomonic kingship, an ideal form of rulership-based on the principles of harmony between predators and prey and justice for all- to be followed by Muslim sovereigns, including the Mughals.

No one captured the raw, dramatic world of Indian circuses quite like the legendary Mary Ellen Mark. Her photos are haunting, powerful, and deeply human. A thread on ten of her most striking circus photographs—each telling a story you won’t forget. 1/12

It’s very important, for example, that the core “code” for how to walk is heavily protected and inaccessible to conscious manipulation. Thankfully, we don’t have to think much about factors like gravitational force and inverted pendulum motion while walking in the park.

And upon Independence and Partition a lot of them became caretakers and administrators of post-colonial/hybrid institutions like the Supreme court, socials clubs, English schools, and missionary schools

There was a whole class of Brits who were born in India, raised by Indian wet nurses, spoke Indian languages before they learned English, & lived there most or all their lives. A subset of those definitely became Indian in a very real sense.
