Much of cultural degradation of Punjab came from NRI’s who moved to England and Canada in 70’s and 80’s. Then Hindi Cinema of 80’s stereotyped Punjabi as balle balle singing, murg masallam eating happy go lucky guy unable to have deep, meaningful conversations. Never mind Punjab…

Wild how much Punjab has changed.

Like all languages, Punjabi too has very rich literature, deep thinkers, phenomenal poets and fantastic singers. What you see depicted in popular culture does so much disservice to Punjabis. But Punjabis don’t take offense over everything and anything. I wish they did. They are…

Now what passes for Punjabi music and culture is a disgrace. Cars, drugs, women, expensive brands, guns, violence - this is what has become of Punjabi music.

The generations who went to UK,Canada and US westernized Punjabi Bhangara music, sold to Bollywood who sold them as "Spicy chaat" to Indian young people. The thumbrule is-To take control over the politics, first take control over the market, then culture, then everything is yours.

You will see a change in few years. Thanks for appreciating our old Punjab.

You've captured succinctly the perception of about Punjabi's especially post partition. My father was in Air Force so I never stayed in Punjab. I was tad ashamed of my Punjabi background. Once a friend called an "atypical Punjabi" and took it as complimentary and bragged it. 1/2

Every community gets stereotyped in Hindi cinema. Blaming Bollywood for the ills is taking the easy way out. And who will Punjabis take offense at? No one forced Punjabis to degrade their music and culture with drugs, women, guns and violence. Introspection isn't easy but needed.

Quick prosperity happened. Easy money is a potent drug, struggle is antibiotic.

IPL did same to Indian cricket you may say Puritanical always lament … look “at glorious past” 😂😂😂😂

Punjabi society is also just so sho sha these days

Hindi music also has plenty of this, but the tragic part is that Punjab has no parallel alternate soulful music like Arijit/shaan etc

This new Punjabi culture was created on similar lines of Pop culture with same intention to break strong traditional values.

There is only one group which dominates the narrative on music from 80s, films afterwards and economy too.

So it's happening from 70's then as society there is no response..we just watch and cry. That's looks like the story of our country

That really is a sad part.. every song coming out of Canada has drugs, cars etc. I don’t like it and overall tarnished the image. It is rich culture that I have heard from my parents and relative. All partition stories of my father and his family.
