If you slide the first apple of the 2nd row to the first row, there are two "question mark shapes"—>? Each "question mark shape" has 6 because they are both one apple roll away from being a hexagon, which automatically has 6 sides without needing to count. 12 total.

I used to tell my grade 9s to think of the symbols as mouths that want to eat ice cream scoops. The mouths want to eat *the ice cream with the most scoops* so the mouth is opened towards the number that is bigger 🍨💕
