Technological innovation can be a form of participation in the divine act of creation. It carries an ethical and spiritual weight, for every design choice expresses a vision of humanity. The Church therefore calls all builders of #AI to cultivate moral discernment as a…
It's not like all we have to do is look at Iran where you have people on street corners and in markets selling VPN access on USB sticks. If government policy is pushing people towards "circumvention measures" for ease of use or for privacy, then government policy is oppressive.
It's not like websites are running around dealing VPNs to Britons like drug pushers on a street corner. UK residents are, on their own initiative, downloading them because they want to see the world as it is, not the world-as-censored-by-the-British-state.
Great news and big win for privacy in the EU! 🇪🇺🇩🇪 Germany’s ruling CDU/CSU party made it clear today: there will be no chat control - as pushed for by other EU countries - with this German government.
40 Sekunden kurz und präzise: Mit der CDU/CSU wird es keine anlasslose Chatkontrolle geben, wie sie von einigen Staaten in der EU gefordert wird.
We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/germ…
Finally had a chance to listen through this pod with Sutton, which was interesting and amusing. As background, Sutton's "The Bitter Lesson" has become a bit of biblical text in frontier LLM circles. Researchers routinely talk about and ask whether this or that approach or idea…
.@RichardSSutton, father of reinforcement learning, doesn’t think LLMs are bitter-lesson-pilled. My steel man of Richard’s position: we need some new architecture to enable continual (on-the-job) learning. And if we have continual learning, we don't need a special training…
The central question of the 4chan/Kiwi Farms lawsuit is this: do the six billion Internet users on our planet get to access American infrastructure on the terms of - the First Amendment, or - the UK's Online Safety Act.
🇺🇸 U.S. FTC warns Big Tech: don’t weaken encryption or censor Americans to comply with foreign laws. Doing so may violate U.S. law if it breaks promises to users. FTC says that tech companies should ignore any such demands of EU or UK regulators.
The Proton VPN servers for Afghanistan running at over 80% load was not something that we expected to see when we set them up last year.
I really liked this piece by @mustafasuleyman warning of the dangers of "Seemingly Conscious AI" x.com/mustafasuleyma…
What I call Seemingly Conscious AI has been keeping me up at night - so let's talk about it. What it is, why I'm worried, why it matters, and why thinking about this can lead to a better vision for AI. One thing is clear: doing nothing isn't an option. 1/
I recently installed all the agent CLIs I could find (basically anthropic claude code, openAI codex CLI, and Google gemini CLI). I admit that I wasn’t expecting much at first, but it wasn’t long after that I was completely addicted to the coding agent loop. They work extremely…

Awesome & wholesome: Slashdotters were dunking on @stevewoz for selling his Apple stock… then he showed up in the comments with the most grounded reply. Gave away his Apple wealth, funds museums, pays his taxes, and measures life by joy: “Happiness is Smiles minus Frowns.”
You can't bug hunt your way to security. AI doesn't change that.
I gave a talk on Wednesday at the Bay Area AI Security Meetup about prompt injection, MCP security and the lethal trifecta. Here are the annotated slides from my presentation, including notes on my weird hobby of trying to coin or amplify new terms of art simonwillison.net/2025/Aug/9/bay…
Real privacy means having the space to figure out who you are before the world tells you who you should be.
