Do you remember having to buy a long distance card to call someone on the phone - and when/if they picked up, both of you being so happy, and simultaneously feeling both a sense of closeness in their voice and a deep longing to see and sense them more clearly? I miss that.
People are upset about (relative) income disparities. Back then this was middle class, and everyone was middle class. Now it's poverty level as you suggest.
In a way, this is nostalgic *because* the material items shown equate to poverty today (tiny 1 bathroom house in rust belt, 1 sedan). It's the 1950s equivalent of today's 50K house and a Nissan Altima, but you see an intact, well groomed, family. That's the kicker.
The tough thing about parenting young kids is that most of the day is, in fact, spent in the anxious middle, never able to turn off low level anxiety & alarm
