Were there instances of group leaders being canned for being in the bottom 10% for consecutive years? And, if so, what happened to their team (which I suppose was partially responsible for the low ranking? Or was the ranking solely a measure of the individual leader?)

I served for years on the Scientific Advisory Board of Novartis. Its CSO Mark Fishman once told me something that changed my life: "Nowadays we can make drugs against any molecule. But for neurodegeneration, we don't know what to target". That's what I've been doing ever since.

From this morning’s chat between Brunkow and a Nobel cmte member: she noted that mapping the mouse mutation (which was heroic: brute force, high risk) would be easy today; and the real discovery was the molecular slog that followed. Many such discoveries remain to be made.
