#Beagle2 launched into space on 2 June 2003, hitching a ride on the @ESA #Mars Express satellite carrier.
The #beagle2 lander's main parachute was "only" 10 m in diameter. The pilot chute, even smaller, can be seen on the right top. For final landing Beagle2 used an airbag system.
Indeed #Beagle2 will always be a significant part of the legacy of the 🇬🇧’s now thriving space sector, which employs around 40,000 people, more than double of that in 2003. As we look forward to future successes, it will always be important to remember: “The Beagle had landed.”

#Beagle2 was found in 2016 after images from @HiRISE were analysed. It was seen that the capsule landed safely, however the different dishes did not deploy as planned.
The images showed that #Beagle2 had survived landing in 2003. It had used its parachutes to correctly slow its descent, deployed airbags to cushion its fall as expected and further analysis conducted in 2016 showed that it unfurled at least 3/4 solar arrays once on the surface.

#Beagle2 was due to land on Mars on Christmas Day 2003 and contact Earth at 5:00 am. 📞 Sadly, the call sign never came and #Beagle2 was declared lost. Or so we thought!
