Delighted to have successfully defended my PhD last month! We built DNA clearing HEK cells and designed AAV protein variants to study their function and improve AAV manufacturing! Huge thanks to my PI @GenePlumber, everyone @UCLBiochemEng1, examiners @alanlparker & @pauldalby!
A grey day in Hamburg spent discussing all things virology and CRISPR screening at the DEFENDER symposium - an EU funded consortium on a mission to identify new targets and develop new therapies against high priority viruses.

A legend is gone. Discovered Type II restriction enzymes (70s), sequenced the first bacterial genome (90s) and synthesised the first bacterial genome (00s).
Prof. Hamilton Smith at J. Craig Venter Institute, a Nobel laureate for discovering type II restriction enzymes, passed away last night. A huge loss in Science, but his legacy will be remembered. @JCVenterInst @NobelPrize jcvi.org/about/hamilton…
Excited to announce PhD position available at the interface of biology/chemistry and mechanical engineering . We are looking to use protein nanowires to make biocatalysis even more sustainable! The position will be at the interdisciplinary MFL UCL East. ucl-epsrc-dtp.github.io/2026-27-projec…
Genome maintenance by telomerase is a fundamental process in nearly all eukaryotes. But where does it come from? Today, we report the discovery of telomerase homologs in a family of antiviral RTs, revealing an unexpected evolutionary origin in bacteria. doi.org/10.1101/2025.1…
Vroomm!! Postdoc extraordinaire @GeoffTHowe has used our "T.gonfio" arrayed CRISPRa library to test ALL human GPCRs (of which there are ~860) for cAMP responses to the prion protein, and found many surprising hits. I could tell you their names, but then I'd have to kill you.
In case you need the world's most powerful CRISPR ablation/activation/silencing reagents, our quadruple-guide vectors are now available at AddGene! addgene.org/Adriano_Aguzzi/

In @NatRevGenet we outline strategies for in vivo pooled (single cell) CRISPR screens for genotype → phenotype mapping in animal models. This contains over a decade of hard earned knowledge by us and the field. Kudos to @AntonioSantinha & Alessio Strano. rdcu.be/eykft
I am super excited to announce that I will be starting my lab at the Department of Pharmacology of the University of Zurich in Switzerland next year!
This is a major success story in today's Science ALSP is a rare genetic condition – life expectancy is about 8 years after symptoms start, and there's no cure But a bone marrow transplant – in 8 patients – halted disease progression, maintained cognition and ability to walk

CRISPR just scored its biggest win yet against Huntington's. The secret? A delivery system called RIDE that sneaks into neurons, makes its edit, then vanishes in 72 hours. Here's what happened 🧵👇
