"By inserting a theophylline-responsive riboswitch upstream of essential genes in Escherichia coli, we created strains whose viability depends on the presence of theophylline. We systematically applied this approach to 29 essential genes, obtained ligand-dependent growth…

I love the elegance of this approach so much! When Michael showed me this data, my jaw dropped. The color streaks provide such a beautiful picture of how genetically distinct strains emerge. Congrats, @baym and team!
Hot off the press! Our latest paper led by @fernpizza , understanding how plasmids evolve inside individual cells. These small pieces of self-replicating DNA live inside bacteria and can transfer antibiotic resistance genes, but they also compete with one another to replicate. 1/
Delighted to finally travel to Australia! A journey almost 20 years in the making. If you're at the UNSW Sydney on November 18th, come hear that story!

So you want to change transgene expression: just change your promoter, right? Changing the promoter increases RNA and thus protein levels. What more could be happening? [1/n] Well, promoters don’t just set RNA levels; they uniquely transform how RNAs are transmitted into protein…
