The automobile has an insatiable appetite for asphalt: 20m2 when parked; 140m2 when moving 50 km/h. In the U.S., paved surfaces cover 111,369km2—an area the size of Ohio—65% of which is streets, parking lots, and driveways; the perfect “habitat for cars”. Parallelweg, Den Haag.

Stonnington CC admits that it gives away close to 30K parking permits free, each year. This is despite the fact that in certain parts of the muncipality, half of residents don't own a car:
Stonnington CC has previously said "No protected bicycle lanes have been introduced as these are better used in arterial roads." Seems it also supports children from 14 to 18 years battling the traffic on the arterial road network to get to school:
Streets in Amsterdam don't necessarily preclude vehicular access, but design cues make it clear that the car is a visitor, and that pedestrians here enjoy priority: #activetravel
Good review of David Mepham's new book "Rethinking Parking" in The Age today--"Mepham says local traders will always support more and cheaper parking, which isn’t surprising since they are “getting the benefits but not the cost”.
Lancaster, CA transformed its downtown in just 8 months by redesigning it's main street from a mini-highway to a tree-lined boulevard. For the cost of just $11.5M, the project has generated $273M in economic output since 2010, creating 800 jobs, and nearly doubling tax revenue!

Stonnington CC says those who benefit from services should contribute proportionately for them. Yet it gives away nearly 30,000 parking permits a year, to park on land owned by the public, free of charge. How is that fair to the 16% of people in Stonnington who do not own car?
Stonnington City Council confirms it has no interest in "separating pedestrians, bicycles and motor vehicles" despite it being Council policy. In answer to a question of the Mayor I received this response on 30 October 2023:
Please post your bluesky links so i can follow you over there, or follow me over there and I'll follow you back. activetravel.bsky.social I'll hopefully soon have something interesting to report from my questions to this week's Council meeting:
Regular reminder that building safe cycling infrastructure is not a technical challenge. It is a political one!
The bank of the Seine in Paris. This used to be space for cars, now for several years it’s been a special place for people. All it took was leadership. Oh, and fighting and winning a court battle when that leadership was challenged. HT @EmmanuelSPV for pic.

“It’s not my duty as mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. For me, it’s the same as if you bought a cow, or a refrigerator, & then asked me where you’re going to put them." This Spanish city has been restricting cars in its city centre for 24 yrs. fastcompany.com/90952175/this-…
It’s REALLY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally AGAINST downtown bike-lanes, later became one of their most vigourous supporters, because of EVIDENCE that bike-lanes are better for downtown business than any street parking they replace.
In 1972, the Amsterdam neighbourhood of De Pijp saw clashes between parents who wanted safer streets for kids and drivers who wanted to cut through. I went to visit yesterday, 51 years later. The traffic filters and playgrounds remain. It is a place many people want to live. 🧵
Remember this picture every single time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam." This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s, via @fietsprofessor. The cities we admire made better choices regarding cars, and are still making them today. Better choices instead of excuses.
