What Ezra means by "the right way," and what I meant expressing a similar line this morning, is that Kirk was operating within a liberal framework that was modeled on persuasion and included real, robust support for free speech. Obviously it's not an endorsement of the content.
I'm writing about this, but that argument fundamentally misunderstands Kirk's entire project. Debates are between human beings; Kirk didn't think his enemies were human at all. He called them demons, evil, abominations, etc. He was after a megaphone, not a debate.
Ezra got this one exactly right, and a lot of you are betraying a total inability to tell the difference between "this person went about the process of advocating for his beliefs in the right way" and "his beliefs are correct."
