Coding assistants make it faster and easier, but the more dependent I get on them, the lesser I find myself retaining details, and debugging LLM generated code is a nightmare. Are we are going to have a generation of programmers who dont have to struggle until its too late ?

I know homeschool parents who spend less than 3 hours a day “doing school” and their kids test several grades above age level. The kids spend their time building forts, caring for animals, playing instruments, helping out around the house/farm, and reading books for fun.

In other words, the hitting-time of the barrier for the drift-less Brownian Motion follows Lévy stable law with alpha=1/2, so the mean is infinite.

This reminds me of how @nntaleb derived the Lindy effect. Here the absorbing barrier is +1

“The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only – and that is to support the ultimate career," - C.S. Lewis. Imagine if our education system taught this instead of the opposite.

William Dalrymple has recently shown himself to be a giant of moral integrity and intellectual courage—unlike the many weaker intellects who shill for a (dying) establishment.

One thing I learned from experience is that those who do solidly well in life never, practically never, do anything in bad faith. Reduce bad faith from, say, that tiny 5% bit to 0%, and see how it works wonders. Simple advice, @__paleologo.

I remember Taleb saying somewhere in the distant past, when he was still exceptionally sane, something like "When you can do a few thing very well, you can afford a lot of mistakes". I came to appreciate this heavy-tailedness of positive payoffs only later. *Every single firm* I…

True. In fact, my boomer opinion is that this is even more true than @DivaJain2 thinks.. i.e. I think peasant Indic values are still superior to the values of the westernized left-liberal OR RW elite..

It is India's elite that runs/owns Corporate India, lives in gated colonies, sends kids to international schools and takes two foreign holidays a year that is letting India down, not Indian dehaat that makes do on freebies.

There's no purpose to human life. There never has been. But ceaseless motion and strife have forged our species. It's in our soul, if we have one. So go ahead and get that job and that house and whatever. And click photos in nature. But don't mind if it all comes to nothing...

Modernities cost of seeing your children succeed beyond your wildest imagination is that you live your last 3 decades alone. If lucky you get ~4 weeks every year with your kids / grandkids. As my parents age, I am in constant regret about not being with them since 1999.

Children are abroad. Parents are in India. Parents in their late 50s and 60s are enthusiastic to visit kids abroad. They do trips once a year or perhaps once in two years. Everyone is happy - both parents and kids. Enter parents into their early 70s, they don't have that much…
