tl;dr Adding dendrites to standard deep learning units helps with continual learning. Dendrites do more than adding capacity or complexity to neuronal computation! Love to work on this type of multidisciplinary work with entertwined Neuro and AI research !
New preprint alert! “Going Beyond the Point Neuron: Active Dendrites and Sparse Representations for Continual Learning” Work by Karan Grewal, @jerem_forest, Ben Cohen, and @SubutaiAhmad. #tweeprint below 👇 (1/13) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
🔥What makes CLAI Unconf an UNconference? Community interaction! In perfect time for the US to wake up: come participate in our first open discussion - lead by experts @SubutaiAhmad & @jerem_forest from 17:15-18:00 UTC on Oct 19th! 🚨Register for free: unconf.continualai.org/register
Awards for big ideas going to max 3 people is completely outdated now. Needs to change.
For all the folks hoping for optogenetics for chemistry Nobel: whom would you give it to? The folks who made the idea? Who found the molecules? Or the people who popularized them? The Nobel prize is no longer meaningful in the era of large collaborations and specialization.
Be a part of the change you wish to see in the world: Donate to help support the legal expenses of Data Colada. They're being sued by Prof Gino after posting careful, meticulous blog posts raising concerns about data integrity in 4 papers. Donate here: gofund.me/70c497b1
The @DataColada team has been sued by Francesca Gino for exposing the fraudulent data underlying four of her papers (she claims defamation). The legal defense could get expensive. Please join us in providing financial support for their defense. gofundme.com/f/uhbka-suppor…
Also, I think papers simply don’t change games any more. Communities do.
Come join me, Oliver Ruebel, @BenDichter , and others as we help disseminate NWB to the broader neuroscience community and help make neurophysiology data more FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable)! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
The NWB team is looking to hire a scientific data engineer to join us at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab to develop new methods and software tools for NWB and related projects in the data management and analysis of biological data. Apply here: jobs.lbl.gov/jobs/scientifi…
These donations are cheap for wildly profitable fossil fuel companies. They purchase influence and create a culture of dependence. If our institution wants to be a global leader in climate justice we need to rethink the dirty money we accept 2/2
I'll be in Montreal Sunday 22nd to Friday 28th ! Who will be around ?
Scholarly publishing doesn't have to be stuck in a world of outdated document technologies. It's due for an upgrade. This is why @neuromatch via our spinoff organization, Scholar Nexus, is partnering with @curvenote on our open publishing project! 🎉🙌
We are brainstorming on how to do the best conferences online. Give us your thoughts ! neuromatch.social/@neuromatch/11…
Lol. Wait till they find out about climate change.
I urge colleagues to abandon NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports as scientific outlets for new work. If Elsevier continues these journals, do not serve on their editorial boards and do not submit new articles to them. Elsevier has no power to profit from us if we simply say No.
People are testing large language models (LLMs) on their "cognitive" abilities - theory of mind, causality, syllogistic reasoning, etc. Many (most?) of these evaluations are deeply flawed. To evaluate LLMs effectively, we need some principles from experimental psychology.🧵

If you're an adult without kids and don't think this hospital crisis affects you, think again. In the ER, if we had to choose between an adult with a heart attack, or a 6 month old struggling to breathe for our last critical care bed, the baby will get that bed every single time

First time to be a reviewer on NSF grants. What's your best advice from a reviewer pov and things you wished would have been considered as a submitter ?
