Another mauling for John Swinney on his ludicrous currency proposals. This time, all he can do is accuse Martin Geissler of being overly gloomy, and suggest that Scotland’s renewables will somehow come to the rescue. Desperate and embarrassing stuff.

The most serious failure of the SNP’s latest independence paper is that it completely ducks the question of how an independent Scotland would get its public finances onto a sustainable footing.

If I was an SNP member or supporter I’d be furious that the party has refused to do any thinking at all since it lost the only battle that really matters in 2014. Since I’m not, I find it baffling but also, let’s be honest, really quite funny. thetimes.com/article/b65865…

2/ At FMQs, John Swinney scolded Russell Findlay for misleading parliament, and said this: “Over half of taxpayers in Scotland continue to pay less tax than if they lived elsewhere in the United Kingdom.” Is Russell Findlay owed an apology? Did John Swinney mislead parliament?

If the SNP won’t talk about their record, then we will: Never has one party accumulated so much political capital to so little effect. Jackie Baillie put it best when she said “The truth is if John Swinney knew how to fix the challenges Scotland faces…he’d have done it by now.”

SNP grandstanding won't create jobs or attract investment. The UK Labour Government is already showing what can be achieved with pragmatic action. This obsession with independence simply won't cut it. Scotland needs a new direction with @ScottishLabour

18 years in power and the SNP really do sound like a stuck record - whatever the question, apparently “independence” has to be the answer (just don’t ask how or why)

On Labour’s watch, energy bills are up, living standards are stagnant, and Farage looks more and more likely to be the next UK Prime Minister. Scotland must have the right to choose a better future - a fresh start with independence. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Using the latest GERS figures, @kevverage compares Scotland’s fiscal position with independent EU countries and argues that a fiscally autonomous Scotland would need to dramatically reduce investment in public services. these-islands.co.uk/publications/i…

It took the threat of an IPSO complaint, and an initial attempt to insert another inaccuracy into the correction, but @ScotNational has finally done the right thing. Let’s hope this is the last time they call Richard Murphy an “expert”.

1/ Another example of the extraordinary innumeracy of Shona Robison. Here she claims the difference between the share of the workforce in the public sector in Scotland and England (22% vs 17%) is largely explained by Scottish Water and ScotRail being publicly owned in Scotland.
