this threat makes a very important point - something more journalists and politicians really need to get their heads around 👇

1/ A Labour-adjacent think tank stating that policy costs have been the largest source of upwards pressure on electricity bills over the last decade, not the gas price (via marginal pricing of electricity). A watershed moment, not just for the UK government…

Wholesale energy costs aren't the *sole* driver of higher energy bills. For electricity, the largest source of upwards pressure comes from increasing costs of government policies and schemes funded through bills. Read 'Splitting the bill' to learn more 👉…

1/ This really matters in the independence debate because what is truly pushing bills higher is disproportionately stuff that is happening in Scotland. If Scotland was independent and had to pay for all that stuff by itself, less of that stuff would happen in Scotland…

1/ The most telling moment from the recent Energy Security & Net Zero committee. Simone Rossi (CEO at EDF UK) carefully sets out why the price of gas is not the main factor in high electricity bills, only to be interrupted by a pompous MP who is certain that he knows better.

this is very much worth a watch - renewables are “A Good Thing”, but developing renewables is not cheap and bill payers bear the cost

Shirley-Anne Somerville refuses (repeatedly) to address the question of how an independent Scotland would deal with its fiscal deficit. Nick Robinson eventually gives up, and winds up the interview.

Martin Geissler’s debrief on his Sunday Show interview with John Swinney. Hard to argue with any of this. #Scotcast

The video which ran before John Swinney’s speech showed this wave energy converter as he claimed independence would reduce energy bills in Scotland. The cost of wave power is £360-£380/MWh - about 4.5x higher than the wholesale cost in bills today. His rhetoric is utterly false.

Another mauling for John Swinney on his ludicrous currency proposals. This time, all he can do is accuse Martin Geissler of being overly gloomy, and suggest that Scotland’s renewables will somehow come to the rescue. Desperate and embarrassing stuff.

The most serious failure of the SNP’s latest independence paper is that it completely ducks the question of how an independent Scotland would get its public finances onto a sustainable footing.

If I was an SNP member or supporter I’d be furious that the party has refused to do any thinking at all since it lost the only battle that really matters in 2014. Since I’m not, I find it baffling but also, let’s be honest, really quite funny. thetimes.com/article/b65865…
