The theory vs reality quote by @nntaleb rephrased for software engineering : “For architects, there is no difference between design and engineering. For engineers, there is”

The state prefers people to have dematerialized property (money in the bank, bonds, stocks) over materialized properties like land, house or gold. The emotional resistance is lowered when such assets are frozen or snatched. Physical wealth creates longing.

The Innocent / El Inocente on Netflix : great start and carry forward until 6th episode with good amount of twists. Final 2 episodes were meh with weak unconvincing ending. Once watchable. Expected something brilliant from Oriol Paulo...similar to his movie The Invisible Guest.

The best way to purge all curiosity and interest in a subject is to take an academic course on that subject and compete for a good grade.

RIP the supremely talented Laoshu / Moses - the youtuber who inspired a lot of people to learn foreign languages. Definitely check out his videos if you haven’t. youtube.com/c/laoshu505000

Every "declarative" language eventually becomes a (terrible) programming language, just without the aid of actual language design. We learned this with XML 20y ago; it astounds me that people seem to think the lesson of that age was that we used the wrong shape brackets.

Terminator 2 : the closest thing to a perfect action film. It is almost 3 decades old, but impossible to get tired of it. Big budget film-making at its best.

Cassandra database in Prod - you can do materialized views, just don’t do it in prod - you can add indexes, just don’t do it in prod - you can use allow_filtering to query on clustering keys, just don’t do it in prod

To avoid burnout in software engineering, always split or decompose your stories/tasks. Most PMs & scrum masters inadvertently become blind to the complexity of something like “Build a Google clone” vs “Run some script”. They just see everything as “tasks”.

A passing comment but an important one by @jgrahamc in a podcast with @matryer : "If a programming language takes 10 years to learn, we should probably deprecate that language"
