And, oh, by the way, just in case your day doesn't have enough doom in it already ... ... I had to increase the upper bound on the y-axis to accommodate the first recorded anomaly of North Atlantic Sea Surface Temperatures greater than 1.0°C, which happened on June 7, 2023:
The alarming anomaly in #Antarctic sea-ice extent continues to increase. But there's something even more extraordinary going on... (a short thread) Graphic: Phil Reid, @BOM_au

This morning, I woke up to a sudden realisation of what a weird system we live in, and how those at the top have been gaslighting us. I have been struggling all day, about whether I should write this, lest it mistakenly be seen as an attack on the rich, which it is not. 1/🧵
This is about the people and places we love. We can do better.
It's quite something that the world's top scientists put out a synthesis report that essentially says civilization as we know it will end unless the world comes together to stop rapidly expanding the fossil fuel industry but to instead rapidly end it, and almost no one cares
Today, after yesterday's #IPCC report, everything is back to normal – as always. We continue to ignore the climate crisis as if nothing happened. Our societies are still in denial, and those in power go on with their never ending quests to maximise profits. We cannot afford this.
It is getting even more impossible to ignore the climate crisis. The fact that people in power still somehow live in denial, and actively move in the wrong direction, will eventually be seen for and understood as the unprecedented betrayal it is. It is just a matter of time.

Why the media won't touch the Barilaro tapes👇 “... the New South Wales law allows for no public interest defence, so the ABC won’t let us broadcast it, even though you can listen to it in full online.” #MediaWatch
It's 17:20 in South Australia and this is the state's electricity mix: 72% wind 21% solar 7% gas The spot price for electricity is A$4/MWh. In Queensland, which is getting 64% of its power from coal, the spot price is A$87.47.
"While volcanic eruptions do cause an increase in atmospheric CO2, human activities emit a Mount St. Helens-sized eruption of CO2 every 2.5 hours and a Mount Pinatubo-sized eruption of CO2 twice daily." -NASA Humans emit 100x more annually than volcanoes: climate.nasa.gov/faq/42/what-do…
Did you say CO2. Well here is that last centuries worth in 10 minutes. Ban volcanoes. Can we make them go solar or wind 🤔
My dear Twitter friends, we still eat from markets, travel in cars, flush our toilets and power-on our devices. We've got a few more years, but not many. You don't need to be a mystic to know the future. Modern civilization is beyond f&%ked. Be kind. theguardian.com/world/2023/mar…
I wrote a new post. It's about hats and identities and starting new things. It also features a drawing of a duck wearing a hat. Hopefully something in that list of things sounds interesting. myoungdraws.substack.com/p/a-hat-is-lik…
No more excuses. No more greenwashing. No more bottomless greed of the fossil fuel industry and its enablers. 2023 must be a year of game-changing #ClimateAction.
It’s time to face the facts: climate change is happening, and we’re the cause. The impacts are far reaching and out our civilization at risk. But there’s still hope, if we act now. We CAN make a difference!
#Mayday🛟 Incredible footage from my US #Coastguard @USCGPacificNW colleagues. Watch the moment a rescue swimmer was deployed from the helicopter🚁to a boat in distress just as a huge rolling wave 🌊hit… all persons were successfully rescued from the water and onto hospital.🙌
