What should we do about high skilled immigration and why? This is the topic of my huge new report with @LettieriDC and @cojobrien: Exceptional by Design. Quick thread on why I think you should read this report. eig.org/exceptional-by…

The level of central planning here is insane. Getting a better number won't really fix the problems with such a command and control system. Stuff like this makes you pessimistic CA will ever be affordable.

California, home of the world's 4th largest economy & several of its top econ departments, has spent 50 years "planning for housing need" w/o availing itself of economic expertise. The game is up, courtesy of the S.F. city economist. My op-ed in today's @sfchronicle ⤵️. 🧵/22

Amazon has been gradually automating warehouses and loudly telling everyone “we will continue automating our warehouses” for 20+ years.

2 years and 1 month ahead of the news. How do we do it?

Lots of true and important points in this essay

"Elites instinctively want to advance policies that serve people like themselves, which requires using narratives about people like themselves as the basis for the policy." commonplace.org/p/oren-cass-yo…

The economy is aeronautics PhD jobs and entry level service jobs and nothing in between. Everyone gets one or the other.

Exactly - allowing this guy in creates more demand for service jobs (Mcdonalds employees, walmart employees, house cleaners, lawn mowers, etc) that Americans can move into from any white collar layoffs the cheaper labor may cause!

Ron Hira thinks we shouldn't let in aeronautics phds working in applied sciences who make $126k a year. How does blocking this person help the working class exactly? Foolhardy nativism like this is bad for this country.

Man, where were all these supposed "internships" with $126,000 salaries when I was in college? That's twice the median salary of year-round, full-time American workers.

It's probably not why... but I think you *could* resolve the Trump admins decision to send china critical semis as consistent with their protectionism, as both could flow from the premise stopping imports is the key to innovation. Drown them in other country's semis.

Zooming out, is this just increasingly true everywhere as the median power centers move out of boomer hands? For example, you might see abundance as a sort of triumph of blogging culture. The sunset of the boomers power will be felt in many ways

Everything is forum-posting culture now.

I was really surprised when I first saw this chart on water use by data centers. Given how much it gets discussed as a supposed problem I would have expected it to be more than this.
