My latest in @nytimes about the likelihood of multiple new wars breaking out across the Horn of Africa at the same time that the Trump Administration is dismantling America's expertise and institutions that have enabled its previous peacemaking there.@csis nytimes.com/2025/05/09/opi…

My interview tonight with @AJEnglish tonight discussing what options the international community could pursue to alleviate suffering in Sudan.

"If Europe wants credibility when invoking international law in Ukraine, Gaza or elsewhere, it cannot ignore the atrocities happening in Sudan." Good article and sensible set of recommendations from @_Will_Brown ecfr.eu/article/sudan-… via @ecfr

President Clinton gets it mostly right. This is terrorism against innocent civilians. But part of the answer is designating the RSF as terrorist organization and then working with their backers to have them disbanded.

What’s happening in El Fasher, Sudan, is pure horror. It’s not war—it’s terror. Innocent people are being killed, hospitals are being attacked, and children are being starved. The world must not look away. We must demand a ceasefire, access to aid, and justice, now.

I'll be speaking @DukeU next Thursday in person and online to discuss the ongoing crisis in #Sudan and what the international community can be doing to respond. Please join! calendar.duke.edu/show?fq=id%3AC…

My interview today with @BBCWorld talking about the tradeoffs that the Trump Administration would have to make in order to increase pressure on the UAE.

Inside the UAE's secret Sudan war operation at Somalia's Bosaso--a base it should be said the US also uses. "A manager at Bosaso’s port revealed that, for the past 2 years, the UAE has funnelled over 500,000 containers marked as hazardous through Bosaso." middleeasteye.net/news/inside-ua…

"Long before its capture, El Fasher had come to embody both Sudan’s endurance and its abandonment." Some thoughts from me on the long term effects of Sudan's partition. theafricareport.com/396851/el-fash…

Not to pick on the UK in particular, but this scramble for emergency meetings now that El Fasher has fallen when the city has been under siege for 18 months feels totally disingenuous. What the hell did people think was going to happen? Feel like the surprise people felt when…

The UK 🇬🇧 hosted another urgent briefing on El Fasher. We are horrified by the abuses civilians have faced following RSF advances into El Fasher. Protection of civilians is paramount. Commitments made must be implemented on the ground.

That is the million dollar question (or rather, the multi-billion dollar question)

"There’s little hope for any Trumpian art of the deal in Sudan." A good look at the growing tide of opposition to the RSF and why Washington is currently under-equipped to end the crisis unfolding there. washingtonpost.com/world/2025/10/…

Bipartisan support for naming the RSF a foreign terrorist organization is growing. The other thing the Hill should do is drag @US_SrAdvisorAF before a Congressional committee to understand just what his strategy for Sudan is. foreign.senate.gov/press/rep/rele…

New satellite imagery (Oct 29) from @planet shows location of where numerous vehicles were burned by RSF and bodies seen on the ground about 15km NW of El Fasher. Location was identified through geolocation of RSF footage, by our @Cen4infoRes Sudan Witness team.

My interview tonight on @AJEnglish on the latest developments in El Fasher and the international effort to resolve it. Very hard to argue that beyond the condemnation that there is any serious effort underway to stop the rampant violence.

Officials made clear the US has no plans for assistance, underscoring the limited scope of the US commitment. “The message was clear. This administration wants a headline—a ceasefire—not a process. There will be no sustained support afterward.” 💯 this👆 3ayin.com/en/burhan/

"Yagoub says he saw 22 bodies near what he called a “fake well” used by the RSF near Tawila. “It’s a trap,” he says. “People walk all day without water, and when they see it, RSF are waiting. They killed 22 men there and took the bodies away to hide.” theguardian.com/global-develop…

"The passage to Tawila is stalked by RSF fighters and allied militias, who run trafficking networks there, and who loot, abduct, and kill those who don’t pay. Families split up and try different routes to maximise the chance that somebody will survive."🤯 thenewhumanitarian.org/analysis/2025/…

How the RSF destroyed El-Fasher’s economy and starved its people. A good look at the economic effects of the siege of the city over the last 18 months. newarab.com/news/how-rsf-d…
