In a surprising yet entirely overdue decision, the 2021 Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded for groundbreaking contributions to complex systems theory with half of the award going to Giorgio Parisi (@giorgioparisi) 1/n nobelprize.org/prizes/physics…
BREAKING NEWS: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2021 #NobelPrize in Physics to Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi “for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems.”
I've been observing the emerging signals again lately. They're becoming harder to ignore. They're reminding me of the more important job that I have to do.
I met a scientist who was just trying to do good science. No Nobel prize fetish. No imposter syndrome. No deep desire for flashy publications. No venting about evil reviewers. No need to gossip about other scientists. Only doing good science. Like a psychopath.
This is a day I’ve dreamed of my whole life, this is the reason @DeepMind was founded, to build AI and use it accomplish extraordinary scientific breakthroughs like #AlphaFold 2, to advance science and benefit humanity. I could not be more proud of the incredible team!
Today with @emblebi, we're launching the #AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, which offers the most complete and accurate picture of the human proteome, doubling humanity’s accumulated knowledge of high-accuracy human protein structures - for free: dpmd.ai/alphafolddb 1/

Alan Mathison Turing was born on this day in 1912. He was a British mathematician who articulated the mathematical foundation and limits of computing. The #ACMTuringAward, computing's most prestigious award, was named in Alan Turing's honor.
“No, I’m not interested in developing a powerful brain! All I’m after is a mediocre brain, something like the President of AT&T.'" - Turing, in an argument with Shannon about AGI at AT&T Bell Labs in the early 1940s
"I took yesterday's failure and I forged it into iron and steel. As it burned, it took on its new shape. Through the flames, an enemy became an ally. And there it was, my creation." - Eddie Pinero #reimagined #strengthenedMyPursuit

Allo! Made a public Twitter account for science/research-related tweets (on #AI, #neuroscience, #complexity science, etc.). Feel free to follow @jgericardo if you're interested. This account shall remain active for personal tweets. 😀
Things are finally getting more interesting. Some people are independently converging on similar research ideas/agendas that I thought were very uncommon. It gives me more hope that we can actually do it. Now, back to work. Back to #firstprinciples and more #basicresearch.
I'm looking forward to digging into this! A rapid and efficient learning rule for biological neural circuits biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Amazing to think it has been 5 years since the #AlphaGo match in Seoul. It was an epic once-in-a-lifetime experience and when I rewatch the award-winning documentary (20M+ views!) all the emotions always come flooding back: youtube.com/watch?v=WXuK6g…

The spinal cord has about the same number of neural connections as the optic nerve — to your brain, all of your body from the neck down is worth about one eye.
