Couldn't agree more @rpondiscio. Jon & Gary @4qmTeaching surface one of the most important issues in elementary social studies, IMHO. @HistoryMatrs @KnowledgeMatrs

Had a "When Harry Met Sally" moment reading this piece, pounding the table and shouting "Oh my God YES!" "We don’t think that the mere presence of primary sources in a history classroom is ipso facto evidence of good teaching and learning." knowledgematterscampaign.org/post/history-t…

“We need to respect our novices and equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to understand history, including through primary sources.” We are loving today’s @KnowledgeMatrs piece! A must-read from Jon Bassett & Gary Shiffman!

“It’s too much, too fast, and with too little context.” Jon Bassett & Gary Shiffman explain why overloading students with primary sources doesn’t help them do history, and what to do instead. 🔗 knowledgematterscampaign.org/post/history-t… #HistoryMatters #KnowledgeMatters #CurriculumMatters

Sentence composition & vocabulary for the win! @StamStam193

Grade 3 Vocab sentences @smorrisey They built a water park in the north SECTOR of the city. The coach ended the BICKERING by blowing his whistle. He was PROTECTED at night, in the forest, because he climbed a tree so the flood couldn't reach him. 1/2

My class started reading Number the Stars today, and I started reading this gem of a book today as well. I just discovered a paragraph referencing my instruction with Number the Stars in this book. What are the odds?

Phonics and "back to basics" isn't enough to raise reading achievement? Agreed. But for those of us age 50 or older, an elementary school education rich in social studies, science, art, and music IS "back to basics."

We couldn’t agree more with this from @USHistoryIdeas: “If early literacy advocates have spotlighted decoding, the challenge now is helping the wider public understand why knowledge matters just as much. And here’s the rub: knowledge has a PR problem.” laurenbrownoned.substack.com/p/the-knowledg…

A "pun of the day" should be mandatory in every classroom. Builds knowledge. ✅️ Funny. ✅️ Multiple exposures to words. ✅️ Language assessment.✅️

Amen @KelseyTuoc. @HistoryMatrs has been banging on this drum for some time now.

The thing that MS, AL, TN and LA are doing right is adopting really good literacy curricula. That means phonics but not just phonics - the top performing ones are also 'knowledge rich', building student understanding of the world.

Think of the effect on their vocabulary too. Ace. There was once an initiative called "Word of the week" to fill the vocab gap. Oh dear. Your brilliant sources and approach is the way to deal with that thorny issue. Great stuff.

👏 Instead of modifying text, we need to teach what our on-grade-level students know to our below-grade level students explicitly so the last ones can access the text like the proficient ones. 👏 #trlconf2025 @ReadingLeagueIL @benzulauf2 @MartinMireles99 @D99Cicero @Amplify

One of my favorite retrieval practice strategies is a “knowledge bomb”. 5 minutes to list everything you know about a concept we’ve been learning about for a few weeks. Challenge them to see who can drop the biggest bomb. They love showing all the know! Again, theme music helps.
