“We need to respect our novices and equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to understand history, including through primary sources.” We are loving today’s @KnowledgeMatrs piece! A must-read from Jon Bassett & Gary Shiffman!
“It’s too much, too fast, and with too little context.” Jon Bassett & Gary Shiffman explain why overloading students with primary sources doesn’t help them do history, and what to do instead. 🔗 knowledgematterscampaign.org/post/history-t… #HistoryMatters #KnowledgeMatters #CurriculumMatters

Sentence composition & vocabulary for the win! @StamStam193
Grade 3 Vocab sentences @smorrisey They built a water park in the north SECTOR of the city. The coach ended the BICKERING by blowing his whistle. He was PROTECTED at night, in the forest, because he climbed a tree so the flood couldn't reach him. 1/2
Primary sources can be powerful — but students first need the knowledge to interpret them. History learning must begin with what happened before asking why it mattered. Read more: 🔗 knowledgematterscampaign.org/post/history-t… #KnowledgeMatters #HistoryMatters #CurriculumMatters

🧠“Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?” Was a bit on a radio talk show and later, a hit game show. 5th Graders *love* to be smarter than adults😉—let’s give them knowledge they NEED to do it! 🎧Listen to episodes 1-3 of the #HistoryMatters Podcast here: bit.ly/4n5pM3C

My class started reading Number the Stars today, and I started reading this gem of a book today as well. I just discovered a paragraph referencing my instruction with Number the Stars in this book. What are the odds?

Phonics and "back to basics" isn't enough to raise reading achievement? Agreed. But for those of us age 50 or older, an elementary school education rich in social studies, science, art, and music IS "back to basics."
Teachers ❤️ to see students 💙 learning! They need quality materials to make this happen!📚 🎧Listen to the #historymatters podcast to hear @rpondiscio, Sean Dimond, Angela Barfoot + Lauren Cascio on the importance of history in elementary schools! 🔗 bit.ly/4n5pM3C

Next on the Knowledge-Building for Teachers Series: Teacher Training On Demand This is a list of my favorite high quality teacher training hubs. Featuring the work of: @ThinkForwardEdu @Steplab_co @SoRclassroom @hillsdaleonline PaTTAN

We couldn’t agree more with this from @USHistoryIdeas: “If early literacy advocates have spotlighted decoding, the challenge now is helping the wider public understand why knowledge matters just as much. And here’s the rub: knowledge has a PR problem.” laurenbrownoned.substack.com/p/the-knowledg…
A "pun of the day" should be mandatory in every classroom. Builds knowledge. ✅️ Funny. ✅️ Multiple exposures to words. ✅️ Language assessment.✅️
Amen @KelseyTuoc. @HistoryMatrs has been banging on this drum for some time now.
The thing that MS, AL, TN and LA are doing right is adopting really good literacy curricula. That means phonics but not just phonics - the top performing ones are also 'knowledge rich', building student understanding of the world.
“Kids want to be little experts—who doesn’t want to? It’s what we call agency.” —@bdavidsonKMC 🎧 Confident Learners: The Power of Historical Knowledge Listen to Episode 3 of the History Matters Podcast: 🔗 podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the… #HistoryMatters #KnowledgeMatters

Think of the effect on their vocabulary too. Ace. There was once an initiative called "Word of the week" to fill the vocab gap. Oh dear. Your brilliant sources and approach is the way to deal with that thorny issue. Great stuff.
👏 Instead of modifying text, we need to teach what our on-grade-level students know to our below-grade level students explicitly so the last ones can access the text like the proficient ones. 👏 #trlconf2025 @ReadingLeagueIL @benzulauf2 @MartinMireles99 @D99Cicero @Amplify

One of my favorite retrieval practice strategies is a “knowledge bomb”. 5 minutes to list everything you know about a concept we’ve been learning about for a few weeks. Challenge them to see who can drop the biggest bomb. They love showing all the know! Again, theme music helps.

New technology, as beneficial as it could be, should never be used to replace teachers or quality curriculum &materials. As I have found in my 🆕 working article-the impact of instructional tools depends on the implementation and support for teachers. ⬇️ nyuliteracylab.com/geodes
This. 💯 Students AND teachers deserve high quality materials and coherent curricula and programs. #CurriculumMatters
📣The impact quality materials have on TEACHERS is HUGE! Angela Barfoot said their old program was not aligned to standards, hard to use and not engaging. [Enter Bayou Bridges]🌉 Learning history through narrative stories has been a game changer! 💐 bit.ly/4n5pM3C

Retrieval practice is a GREAT technique. I use it a ton during history - and can be done joyfully in a thousand ways 👇is just one of them
