a lot of books predicting the future have said the age of internet will make everyone smarter because of access to knowledge is everything ever written but we're becoming retarded, chatgpt says we're always right as we consume another youtube short, predicting behavior is hard

We’re likely well past the inflection point where the quality of consumer goods, adjusted for difference in purchasing powers, is far higher in Chinese cities than U.S. ones. Chinese manufacturing and design got better, yes, but things from U.S. brands have simply become worse.

"after a god-like entitly 10000x more intelligent/powerful than all of humanity is conjured: a) it'll give me resources so I can just do whatev i want! b) I will personally be very useful in the world still!" this is the default take on "post-AGI" life lol, we're so unprepared
my post-AGI plan is to find somewhere beautiful and quiet in the middle of nowhere (ideally mountains) run a combination coffeeshop + laundromat and build open-source math and physics games and educational videos for my kids (if I have them) or other people's kids (if i don't)
This is an appreciation thread for EuterPen, a multimodal music notation system by @Vincent_Cavez et al. It aims to support the non-linear process of exploration during composition. It's the most sensitive and imaginative academic HCI design work I've seen in quite some time!
I just realized something most people are going to lose when (as they inevitably will) they start using AIs to write everything for them. They'll lose the knowledge of how writing is constructed.

I'm not entirely sure what to call the problem the U.S. has — maybe bloat? Or ballooning? The combination of inadequate regulation together with monied interests has created enormous waste. Of course, it won't be fixed by "DOGE" or similar since they're part of that system.
it's really hard as a young engineer i think to switch from thinking of sw engineering as the practice of building static artifacts (code) to the practice of building and maintaining living systems involving people and running computers. but i think that makes a big difference.
